Berwick et al. (2018) article enlightened me that clinical trials, primary research, and implementation research should inform global decisions in nursing practice and patient care. Proposed interventions to improve health outcomes, especially in low-resource settings, should be examined and their efficacy confirmed locally prior to being implemented in other larger settings. I concur with the article that governments and private sectors globally should actively participate in continually improving the quality of care and show commitment to meeting universal health coverage needs.
This course has equipped me with immense knowledge of healthcare policy. I will apply the knowledge from this course in the forthcoming practicum experience to participate in developing healthcare policies. I have learned about the policy development process and will use the knowledge to propose a healthcare policy and push it to legislators for enactment. In addition, I will apply the knowledge to analyze existing healthcare policies and their impact on the delivery of patient care at the practicum site (McCartney et al., 2019). I will analyze how the policies affect nurses, healthcare providers, and consumers. I will then recommend policy changes or amendments that will alleviate the associated challenges and analysis of the components and consequences of policies currently impacting nursing, consumers, and the healthcare system.
One can apply the content acquired from this course in future courses to understand the ethical, historical, and political factors that influence healthcare policies. Besides, one can use the course knowledge to identify areas in healthcare delivery that can significantly benefit from policies and thus propose relevant policies (McCartney et al., 2019). I will apply the course content to examine the controversies and challenges related to the existing and upcoming healthcare policies and understand what hinders some policies from being enacted.

It never ceases to amaze me how fast t our sessions fly by! I feel we have learned quite a bit during these past eight weeks, and have been able to learn together and from each other along the way. I slightly panicked when I saw that there were 2 separate discussion posts each week making a total of six posts, however that quickly became a non issue once I saw how they tended to line up together, it really wasn’t too difficult. I must say I really enjoyed the case studies quite a lot. I feel they were very realistic situations that we would run into in the field as nurse practitioners, as well as real life situations we could run into with any job, such as the work conflict we saw with the co workers who argued in front of patients. I also really enjoyed learning about the variations in scope of practice and autonomy for NPs from state to state. I knew there were some variations, but learned more about to what extent. Very interesting. I feel very deeply that these variations needs to end, and that the US needs to get on board with having more continuity amongst the states, more specifically by allowing NPs to have full independent practice and autonomy across the nation.
My hope is that those involved in making this decision (such as the medical and nursing boards) will come together and see that it is more beneficial than not to allow NPs to be independent. Nurses, including those such as us whom are going to become future NPs, need to assist in being the voice to help facilitate this action. It is easy to say we need to do something, it is another thing to actually try to do something. Its one thing to talk the talk, another thing to walk the walk. My hope is, since there is so much evidence based practice backing up the benefits of full, independent practice of NPs, that hopefully government organizations will see the positive benefits, and see that so many states already have Independent practice NPs, hopefully they will see the positive benefits and begin to allow this across the nation. Now, although I can see the benefit of the LACE presentation, and appreciated the what I learned from the research behind it and didn’t mind created the PowerPoint presentation, I must say that the whole Kaltura aspect of it is not that great. That is by no means any reflection on Dr. Storms, as she is wonderful, nor is it anything against the course itself, it is simply the program itself that is flawed and needs work. I had nothing but problems with it. That being said, the assignment itself was good and I learned a lot in the research and preparing it that WAS beneficial, and I learned a lot from it.
I learned a lot from this class overall, and found it very enjoyable. I learned a lot, not only from the content and research involved with the course, but also learned so much from my peers. I thank you Dr. Storms, as well as all of my classmates, for such a wonderful session. We have all grown so much from one another!!

I found this course to be very informative in a variety of ways. As a nurse, we learned the different values that we possess, but as a nurse practitioner those may change some. Honestly, the case studies were very helpful. I like to be put into scenarios such as those and have to work through them with the help of classmates. They made me think of ethical decisions that I may have to make as a nurse practitioner. As a nurse, some of those scenarios I have never been in, but obviously as a nurse practitioner, I could be in an uncomfortable situation like some of those that were presented. I had never taken time to figure out HMOs versus PPOs. After reading about them, I feel like they are similar in so many ways, but also have their differences. This information will be helpful when I start practicing.
I also enjoyed doing the research for the scope of practice for each state. I didn’t realize that each state was so different in the types of MSN they recognized, what they allowed them to do, and their licensure requirements. It was good to look into my state to know what I will be looking forward to once we have completed school. The use of Kaltura was rather difficult to figure out how to get the information uploaded, but the presentation itself was interesting to do. I realized how many times I said “um” when I was speaking! It took me multiple times of recording to be satisfied with my recording!
I had never heard of curriculum vitae, so that was interesting to learn about and write. It does look more professional than a resume, so I am glad we learned about the use of that. I was stressed out with the practicum information until this class when we started breaking down each class, what was expected for that rotation of clinicals, and the process of setting up clinical rotations. I feel better about this now and am in the process of getting them set up.

When I did my report, I actually learned the difference between a resume and a curriculum vitae. I have always heard of a resume and rarely heard about a CV. However, it made me aware of the difference between them. I think I will create two different kinds. I think now I will work on having a curriculum vitae and also having a resume at hand just in case employers ask for both. I think it makes more sense to also have a CV because nursing is not just a job but an actually career that people stay a long time in. Becoming more marketable and learning different ways to reach employers is extremely important with obtaining a new job. With this educational program, the idea is to start on a new path as a nurse practitioner. It is important to have both when applying for a nurse practitioner job. Also upon doing the paper I was able to learn the difference. Along with the LACE project and learning the CV, it really set the foundation for the path that I decided to take as a nurse practitioner and learning how it is important to have both on file when applying for a new job. This class was amazing and I appreciate everything we learned. Thank you Professor Storms for teaching this class!
I too learned the difference between a resume and CV. During my undergraduate nursing studies, students were directed to create their resumes. This was due in part that many of us did not have enough experience and credentials to create an impressive CV. However, as graduate nursing students, many of us have been in the field for five or more years. The CV would be the better format to reflect our knowledge, skills, and professional strengths. Kawar, Dunbar, and Scruth (2017) state there are three ways nurses can showcase who they are: the resume, the CV, and the portfolio (2017). Kawar et al., (2017) advise nurses to determine the nature of the job and what they are trying to accomplish before summarizing their qualifications into one of these formats.

I can honestly say this has been my favorite class so far due to the curriculum and information we have learned in the past eight weeks. With a higher demand for healthcare providers and changing and expanding roles of the APRN, it is important to learn and understand the APRN role better (Englebright, McCurley, & Borum, 2017). This course has prepared us to meet the program outcome number four, MSN essential II, and NP core competencies number two, providing information about the skills and role of an APRN.
For professional value four, we integrated values through scholarship and service through our weekly discussions. We had many scenarios that we may come across as APNs and talked about the values we have and what we could or should do if put in those situations. For MSN essential II, we discussed work relationships, disagreements in the workplace, working under a physician, and leadership skills. We also discussed organizational leadership. Lastly, we fulfilled leadership NP core competencies. We learned about APRN roles in the states we live in and also how we desire a change to allow a practice to full educational scope. We reviewed state policies and collaborative relationships we may have in the future. We reflected on our strengths and weaknesses to improve on. As NPs, we will improve access to and delivery of high-quality care to care to benefit the underserved. We also learned that some states, specifically Georgia where I live, is highly restricted. States like Washington can prescribe and see patients with no restrictions. Unified healthcare is beneficial to all. We wrote a paper, formed discussions, and did a recorded LACE presentation. Public speaking has always been one of my biggest fears. Lastly, we talked about joining professional organizations to network and make a change. This class has been very beneficial to me and I am excited to take this newfound knowledge with me for years to come.
