The research under consideration investigates the recording and accuracy of fluid balance monitoring among critically ill patients in different healthcare settings. The research was quantitative and involved the collection of data from physical assessments of the patients. The data was also collected during monitoring and record-keeping. The monitoring of fluid balance records was done in the local intensive care units (Diacon & Bell, 2014). The results indicated that seven out of ten fluid balance calculations were not correct. Measuring fluid balance is essential for the intensive care unit; it is one of the approaches to ensuring patient safety. The study aims to identify and describe the present clinical nursing practice in the fluid balance as well as monitor and measure the accuracy of fluid among the patients in intensive care units. The research was undertaken as part of a master’s degree course in nursing.
Purpose of the Study
The purpose of the study is to investigate, identify, and describe the current clinical nursing practice in fluid balance monitoring as well as measurement accuracy in Intensive care units. The study relies on the data gathered from different patients within the ICU’s. Maintaining the fluid intake is essential for critically ill patients. The study also aims to establish the best fluid monitoring techniques and the procedures that can be used to ensure patient safety in the ICUs.
Research and Design
The research is quantitative, given the fact that raw data has to be collected for the processes answering the research questions. There is the use of quantitative data analysis processes to determine the correlation between variables. From the research, there is use of both independent and dependent variables. The research design is quantitative; data is collected in the form of figures the databases. Additionally, surveys were conducted to determine the fluid balance among the patients in intensive care units. The study uses data to answer the research questions and fulfill the research objectives.

Sample and Data Collection
From the study, samples of the patients were drawn from the population. The sample used was a representation of the entire population under the study. A simple random sampling technique was used to identify the participants for the study. The sample size used was 103, meaning that one hundred and three patients were identified for the study.
The process of data collection was done at the point of patient entry into intensive care units. The fluid balance was recorded for each patient among the study participants selected. The data was then recorded under different variables for the purposes of the study. One of the data that was collected was the level of fluid balance for each patient. Also, product products were measured and recorded. As the patients were being monitored, different blood conditions were measured to determine the fluid balance. The results were then recorded and organized as data.
Data Analysis and Limitation
From the data analysis, there were descriptive statistics to show different attributes of the variable used. The Mann-Whitney U-test was used to determine the association between the recorded variables and the fluid balance calculation accuracy. Given that the data collected was not normally distributed, a non-parametric test was considered in the whole process of analysis. Mann-Whitney U-test is a non-parametric approach used in data that dies not exhibit normal distribution or normal trend (MacFarland & Yates, 2016).

One of the limitations of the study is that the sample used was collected within a short period in a span of 48 hours. To ensure the collection of verifiable data, there is always the need to collect data at different times. Another limitation is the use of non-normally distributed data in the research process.
Findings/Discussion
From the study, findings showed that the fluid balance calculation is not a priority in patient management. In other words, it is not necessary for nurses to engage in the fluid balance calculation for the intensive care unit patients. Also, one study’s findings showed that the incorrect fluid balance calculation indicated that every patient management decision utilizing the fluid balance data was influenced by inaccurate information. One of the interesting things learned from the findings is that the fluid balance calculation is not necessary for the nurses taking care of the patients.
Reading Research Literature
Reading and understanding the research literature is critical in the research process; it enables an individual to understand the purposes and objectives of the study. The research literature also provides on the anticipated outcomes of the research (Hacid et al., 2019). One of the lessons I have learned from the reading is that the quantitative research process is critical in analyzing different situations since it involves collecting raw data that reflect the participants’ true conditions.
