Ethics
Ethics is dictated by the personal view of what is right and that which is wrong. Cultural values tend to shape one’s perception of right and wrong. Laws are also utilized in dictating that which is right and what is wrong.
Some of the ethical principles in the nursing informatics role include privacy of information, strictness on data collection only where such information is valuable and needed, enhancing data integrity, informed consent of the owners of such data and adherence to the existent laws (McCormick & Saba, 2015).
Principles of beneficence, informed consent of the study participant’s and integrity are some of the major guiding ethical principles in nursing leadership (Cherry & Jacob, 2016). Nurse leaders have a role to play in ensuring that the benefits that are derived from a study are beneficial to the nurses and the patients and privacy and informed consent of the patients are also enhanced.
The key difference between ethical consideration in the nursing informatics role and in nursing leadership role is that nursing leadership integrates ethics in dissemination of care to patients while ethics in nursing informatics role is primary based on data collection, storage and utilization of clinical data in clinical practice. However, they are both grounded on similar ethical principles.
Education
The informatics nurse needs to take up training programs in nursing informatics, preferably at the graduate level to enable him or her to executive his or her duties effectively.
Nurse leaders often have to take up education programs through pursuits in undergraduate and post graduate degrees in nursing. They can also take up roles in effecting health policy, facilitate nursing research and entrench evidence based practices.
The education pursuit of the informatics nurses enhances their capability of integrating technology to nursing practice. This is based on their first degree at the graduate level. On the other hand, nurse leaders take up more professional training that would enable them shape health policy and leadership of nursing units.
Leadership
The nursing informatics manager has a key role in gaining knowledge on nursing informatics and being an influencer in the future informatics practice (McCormick & Saba, 2015). That they head the informatics department ensures that nurse informatcists influence some policies therein.
The nurse leader recruits, delegates, mentors and heads the nursing units,. They are also in the front line of delivery of care to their patients.
While the nurse leader is the head of the nursing unit, the informatics nurse heads the informatics department. They play a complimentary role in enhancing quality of care that a medical facility offers to their patients.
Public Health
Informatics nurses play a key role in dissemination of information that could be used in the analysis of spread of a given infection, thus, enhancing quick and accurate response to public health issues.
Nurse leaders facilitate research on public health issues which would then effect policy for the management of the public health out breaks that could result (Cherry & Jacob, 2016).
While the role of the nursing informatics is to disseminate information, the nurse leaders define the public health policy to be utilized.
Health Care Administration
The role of the nursing informatics is only limited to data management.
The nurse leader is in charge of routine running of the health care administration and all clinical operations in it.
While the informatics role is only limited to data management, the nurse leaders manage the entire health care administration including the department headed by the informatics manager.
Informatics
The nursing informatics role is possible with certification from American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC). In addition, they need to have experience as a registered nurse with approximately 2000 hours of clinical practice (Collen & Ball, 2015).
The nurse leader needs to hold a BSN besides being a registered use with more than 1000 hours of nursing practice. They could also play a pertinent role as nurse researchers with capability of data collection during clinical trials (Cherry & Jacob, 2016).
The informatics role is an exclusive role that is reserved for the informatics nurse.
Business/Finance
The informatics nurses do not shape the budgets of their office and have to solely rely on those approved by the nurse leaders.
The nurse leader budgets for the entire nursing unit.
The nurse leader approves the budget proposal that is raised by the informatics nurse.
Specialty (e.g., Family, Acute Care)
The specialty of the informatics nurses is that of maintaining healthcare data based on the existent healthcare policies and laws.
Their specialty tends to range from acute care for the nurses, family medicine and general practice. The specialty of the nurse leaders is to look into ways through which care could be advanced to the public and patients visiting a facility.
While the specialty of the informatics nurse is primarily on the management of health information and data, the specialty of the nurse leaders range from general care to the acute care wards.
Regulatory Bodies or Certification Agencies That Provide Guidance or Parameters on How These Roles Incorporate Concepts Into Practice
The American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) is the major regulatory body.
National council of States Boards of Nursing is the major regulatory authority for the nurse leaders.
Both the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) and National council of States Boards of Nursing regulate nurses of all specialties.

Week 1 Announcement
Hi everyone,
This week we are going to dive right into NUR-513. This first week, we discuss the history of advanced registered nursing (ARN) scope and how it has evolved in its scope and expectations. We will also be researching what the National Academy of Medicine (previously called the Institute of Medicine) recommends for nursing education and how the ARN can impact the health system. You will be completing two discussion questions and responding to your peers’ discussion questions. Finally, your Topic 1 assignment is to complete an online learning environment scavenger hunt. This scavenger hunt can be critical to your success at GCU, so please take the time to read and complete this well.
Libby, I couldn’t agree more with your statement that the COVID-19 pandemic required role changes for nurses across the spectrum. Public health nurses were thrust to the forefront as the whole of society became potential patients. As Shelby County Health Department Director Alisa Haushalter, DNP, RN, PHNA-BC stated, “If Public Health does its job well, you generally don’t know we exist.” (Gold, 2020) During the pandemic, no longer could public health nurses function quietly behind the scenes because their unique set of knowledge, skills and training were desperately needed. Public health civil servants stepped up and functioned as leaders during the most critical times. My hope is that we as a healthcare system do not return completely to the status quo of before the pandemic. I feel that public health nurses should remain in key leadership roles throughout the government and the community in hopes that a proactive instead of reactive approach can be adopted.
I look forward to rich discussions with all of you.

Post a response to your peers of at least 100 words on 3 different days during the week. Notice this doesn’t just say 3 responses; it must be 3 different days. This is a GCU requirement.
I mark your response as either “substantial or not substantial” as I read them; watch for those markings throughout the week. If one of your responses was marked as “not substantial,” you will know to add another to receive full participation points that week. However, if you have waited until the last three days to reply to their responses, you will not be able to add another response to receive full participation credit. So I encourage you to respond early in the week and watch for those “substantial” or nonsubstantial” response markings.
