Hi Class,
This week were looking at the Roles of Congress and the Presidency. The US Presidency has not always been the powerhouse it is today. It really didnt grow until what we know as the modern Presidency (FDR and on). This evolution widened the scope of the Presidency from the more focused office the Founders had in mind. If you review the U.S. Constitution and compare it to the Presidency of today, it is a pretty good argument to make that the institution of the Executive Branch has grown considerably (LeLoup & Shull, 2003). Some of this can be attributed to âbattlesâ between Congress and the Executive, but I think it would be a mistake to dismiss the environment which these institutions operate in as a major driver. Who could have, back in the days of the Founders, predicted nuclear weapons or drones? Do you think itâs very realistic for Congress to have held tight to declaring war when the world changed during the Cold War Era and that war would have been over and done in thirty minutes or so? Probably not. I think this is an important factor to keep in mind as we progress and study even more about the Executiveâs relationship with other branches, such as the Congress.
