NR 351 Week 1 Graded Discussion Topic –
After reviewing the Massachusetts Nurse of the Future Nursing Core Competencies, I believe that these 10 competencies were selected because they all have an impact on patient care and are vital to the nursing profession. They act as a guide to upcoming nurses as well as increase the current care to our patients. My unit is always trying to improve patient care by keeping up with competencies to make sure we as professionals are up to date with the most recent recommendations of care for our laboring patients along with postpartum and newborn care. In order to provide safe, effective patient care, nurses must have competence with clinical skill and decision making (Hood, 2018).
The two competencies that are most important to me in my nursing career are teamwork and collaboration along with communication. Every day, we need to keep the line of communication open with our patients, nurses, doctors, family members, and other core staff. Working on a Labor & Delivery unit, each day can be similar but each patient and their plan for delivery may differ. Interacting effectively with your patient, families, and coworkers is crucial. It is also very important to keep the patient involved since we are their care provider. Promoting a mutual respect along with shared decision making allows us to keep patient satisfaction and have great outcomes along with making the patient feel like their birth plan was carried out. “Advancing the education of all nurses is increasingly recognized as essential to the future of nursing practice” (Massachusetts Nurse of the Future Nursing Core Competencies, p.4).
I feel that both teamwork and communication complement each other and allow you to build a strong support system with your coworkers and other core professionals throughout your career. When working together you can usually find the solutions that will work best for all involved. “System structure alone does not produce high reliability” (Lyndon, 2011).

In today’s changing healthcare environment, it is more important than ever for professional nurses to be
skilled in collaborating with professionals from other healthcare disciplines. What communication
strategies can professional nurses use to specifically promote collaboration with other healthcare
disciplines and professionals?
While reading the AACN Essentials of Baccalaureate Education I found that their explanation of how a liberal education, combining arts and science, are needed for a well rounded nurse resonated with me. Hood also talks about how learning and education as. a continuous process and is different at each level of learning. There is a consistent theme of growth and adaptation. I am continually learning new programs, processes, and skills so that I can then help teach the staff. This is a similar impression I got from the Massachusetts Nurse of the Future Nursing Competencies. In that reading they discussed the 10 competencies each nurse needs to learn. These 10 items cover a wide range of skills and knowledge. They say that “competence is developed over a continuum and can be measured” (Massachusetts nurse of the future nursing core competencies pp 10). This quote directly relates to the 2 competencies that I think will most impact my practice as a nurse. They are communication and technology and informatics. I feel these are very influential on my area of practice because as a nurse educator it is very important to communicate effectively with staff. Communication in Nursing Practice talks about how there are two main parts in communication and it is a two way street that is impacted by both the message and how that message is received(Kourkouta, Papathanasiou 2014). I must find a way to ensure that the information is clear and understood. This requires me to change and adapt my style of teaching as needed. As well as learn multiple was of explaining something. Also I need to ensure that announcements for educational opportunities are distributed in a way that can be found and seen. Once I have taught a new skill or process I have to be able to show how well the information was assimilated. I have to be able to show management or Joint Commission that we provided education and training on various items. Without the informatics it looks like the training never happened. So for me communication and informatics and technology are very important.
