Berwick et al. (2018) article enlightened me that clinical trials, primary research, and implementation research should inform global decisions in nursing practice and patient care. Proposed interventions to improve health outcomes, especially in low-resource settings, should be examined and their efficacy confirmed locally prior to being implemented in other larger settings. I concur with the article that governments and private sectors globally should actively participate in continually improving the quality of care and show commitment to meeting universal health coverage needs.
This course has equipped me with immense knowledge of healthcare policy. I will apply the knowledge from this course in the forthcoming practicum experience to participate in developing healthcare policies. I have learned about the policy development process and will use the knowledge to propose a healthcare policy and push it to legislators for enactment. In addition, I will apply the knowledge to analyze existing healthcare policies and their impact on the delivery of patient care at the practicum site (McCartney et al., 2019). I will analyze how the policies affect nurses, healthcare providers, and consumers. I will then recommend policy changes or amendments that will alleviate the associated challenges and analysis of the components and consequences of policies currently impacting nursing, consumers, and the healthcare system.
One can apply the content acquired from this course in future courses to understand the ethical, historical, and political factors that influence healthcare policies. Besides, one can use the course knowledge to identify areas in healthcare delivery that can significantly benefit from policies and thus propose relevant policies (McCartney et al., 2019). I will apply the course content to examine the controversies and challenges related to the existing and upcoming healthcare policies and understand what hinders some policies from being enacted.

When I reflect back over this course, I am able to see how valuable epidemiology is within the Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) specialty track. The MSN program outcome #2 revolves around promoting quality and safety of care within the advanced nursing practice. Given this, through the course outcomes in NR503 I was able to uphold this through diving into what epidemiology means and how it applies to community health and population research. Epidemiology goes hand in hand with community health. In improving the wellbeing of those that are in the unhealthiest of today’s world, the overall healthiness of the society can be improved. Focusing on the study of epidemiology to close the gap on these disparities will vastly reduce health imbalances in society as a whole (Marmot, 2017). Epidemiology will continue to seek to increase safety and quality of care as it studies disease worldwide. By being knowledgeable about study designs and epidemiological surveillance, one is able to realize the significance it places on increasing safety and quality of care. All of the course outcomes within NR503 aid in the understanding of how this kind of information promotes the safety and quality of health care practices. Specifically, I was able to meet the MSN Program Outcome #2 through weekly discussions as we discussed aspects of epidemiology that seek to increase safety and quality of patient care practices, such as identifying study designs that seek to improve patient care practices through epidemiological research. Another way this outcome was achieved was through the epidemiological problem paper as this helped us identify an epidemiological problem within our geographical region so that we, as future advanced practice nurses (APNs) can be knowledge about epidemiological research so that we can improve the safety and quality of care to patients in which we treat.

MSN Program Outcome #2
MSN Essential IV promotes incorporating scholarship within practice. Clinical scholarship is foundational to nurses across all venues and will be an essential element to uphold within practice as it serves the populations in which one practices (Wilkes, Mannix, & Jackson, 2013). The outcomes within this course support this mission as they help us understand epidemiological study designs, and the importance they play within practice. As epidemiological issues are researched, they can be integrated into practice and serve as a reminder that other areas may need to be researched in order to continuously improve patient care practices. Take for example, one way this outcome was met was through this course we were able to identify sources of epidemiological data within discussions. By FNPs being knowledgeable about sources of epidemiological data will be resourceful as they use this data to support best patient care practices that aid in decreasing the transmission of disease, thus integrating knowledge into practice. Another way a course outcome from NR503 supported and achieved MSN Essential IV was by researching issues such as infectious disease, chronic disease, and exposures within the discussions, as well as within the three papers completed in this course. I was able to deepen my knowledge regarding diseases such as diabetes, chickenpox, and influenza as I will be a future leader within treatment of these diseases. Knowledge I have gained regarding prevalence and incidence of the disease through the papers within this course will help me be mindful as I am diagnosing infectious and chronic diseases so that scholarship and knowledge can be applied, specifically for at risk populations. By FNPs being knowledgeable about epidemiology it will seek to strengthen the foundation of scholarly knowledge that is used and applied within practice.
NP Core Competencies (NONPF) #4
Lastly, NONPF #4 revolves around the FNP developing new practice methods that support research, theory, and knowledge within practice. FNPs will be key facilitators within developing the newest and most current evidence-based practices within the epidemiological realm. Specifically, NR503’s course outcomes and assignments have met this competency by allowing us to appraise and research a public health issue that is relevant to our geographical location. This will be where we as FNPs express the knowledge gained from the project and course outcomes to populations and communities that we will treat as they promote new practices in relation to patient care and within their practice setting so that patient care practices are enhanced. Also, this course has met this competency by discussing genetics within epidemiology as it is the future of epidemiological practices. New methods regarding epidemiology will be researched and this research will evolve from genetics as FNPs continue to integrate genetics and research into practice. FNPs will be leaders within promotion of epidemiological research and key facilitators in developing new methods that support genetic involvement within epidemiology. Involvement and development of genetics in research will seek to improve patient outcomes. It will be important that FNPs and APNs be mindful and provide proper education about genetics so that awareness can be raised on the subject (Calzone et al., 2017). APNs will be leaders within further development of genetic epidemiological processes that can be promoted within practice.

Professor and class,
The course outcome for NR 503 has been very beneficial in meeting the requirements for me to obtain the requirements needed for a Master’s in Nursing and a Nurse Practitioner. The MSN program outcome #2 focused on care. It was met by learning the definition of epidemiology, knowing how to calculate risk factors, and how to measure intervention outcomes in order to create a caring environment for achieving quality health outcomes. We’ve learned that the environment can play a major role on health outcomes; therefore, achieving a caring environment or community can assist in the MSN program outcome #2. Focusing on the population’s health can achieve this outcome.
MSN Essential IV focuses on clinical scholarship within practice. Similar to applying evidence into practice. Obtaining population health information from surveillance and research (PO 2) allowed me to meet this MSN essential. By studying the rates of an infection or disease we can then provide evidence-based interventions to lower those rates. For example, when we have an issue we research, surveillance, identify those at risk, intervene, assess, and modify interventions to better the health outcome. This example was performed in our week 6 paper of infectious disease. I researched syphilis and found ways to implement evidence-based practice to prevent syphilis. Wilkes, Mannix, and Jackson (2013) described four ways to apply clinical scholarship: discovery, integration, application, and teaching. I am building and disseminating knowledge and then I will share this knowledge through interventions and teaching methods.
The course outcome allowed me to meet the Nurse Practitioner Core Competency #4 by preparing me for leadership. I can take action and focus on epidemiological data and surveillance in my community. I can help support research and support the development of new practice methods. Again, going back to syphilis, finding new and better ways to screen for syphilis in our at risk population. I touched on this in my papers and discussion questions.
The discussion questions allowed each of these outcomes to be met by allowing us to research and interact with our peers and their findings. This class has been beneficial in my future studies and practices. Already working in public health, NR 503 has allowed me to better understand the roles of public health and how they determine the rates of STDs. We would have meeting on the high incidences of certain disease and I was unsure on how this was determined. I am now more familiar with epidemiology and its terminology. I will now be able to follow along more in meetings and discussions and maybe even play a role in surveillance.

This course has equipped me with the knowledge and resources to better serve my patients through continued surveillance, thus meeting the MSN essentials IV and the NP core competencies by applying the knowledge obtained and incorporating research findings within my practice. I have a better understanding of epidemiological study designs and their importance in determining measures of disease occurrences. Epidemiology as we know is an important part in public health and we utilize findings to establish policies and programs that help in assessing our community. The information obtained through studies will also aid in diagnosing and treating our patients which also ties into our MSN program outcome #2. Epidemiology informs clinical decisions by utilizing research findings and integrating them into practice. Our role as the FNP is to promote optimal health through advocacy, education, and research along with surveillance and reporting of communicable diseases. Going back to previous discussions, disease prevention is one of the primary goals in public health and educating the public on prevention strategies such as vaccinations, is an important part of our care. According to the CDC, vaccines have the ability to prevent diseases in those who are vaccinated as well as providing protection to those who are unvaccinated (CDC, 2017). This is only a small example of the many ways we as primary care providers can utilize epidemiological findings. Overall, I feel more confident in understanding epidemiological information and research, specifically; surveillance, reporting, and sensitivity. I learned a valuable amount of information that will contribute to my nursing profession in many ways.

Reflecting on this class, I have read about many epidemiology concepts and applications, about the incidence and prevalence of disease, and most importantly about my expected role as an advanced practice nurse. The most important thing that I will take away from this class is the idea and proof that I will be more effective as a nurse because I have learned that identifying risk factors in patients and talking to them about disease prevention methods and actions will decrease the incidence and distribution of disease in populations. My goal as a nurse is not to just learn or memorize words, terminology that is important to know but even more vital to understand and apply, but to recognize diseases in my patients or those at risk and be able to apply proven healthcare interventions. Providing better patient care to the population I serve is what drives me. I work with a population that really needs my help because most of them are suffering from a chronic disease or disability that keeps them from being able to care for themselves. For those of my patients who can do a little for themselves, they are suffering from preventable diseases. I work with patients that are diagnosed with a variety diseases and conditions, so applying MSN program outcome #2 (create a caring environment with the goal of attaining significant health outcomes will come in handy. Care-focused nursing is an expectation of every patient and every nursing organization and should be applied in every clinical setting. In week two, the discussion question required us to define a test, and explain its positive predictive value, reliability and validity. We also had to discuss the patient’s medical or family history as a factor that may influence whether I recommend screening or not. I work with a large population of men over 55, and many of these men are African-American. Both of these factors place these patients in the risk category for developing prostate cancer. Most men of any age do not like taking prostate exams, which is a guiding factor as to why they don’t get them. This discussion taught me that in order to provide care focused nursing in a caring environment, I have to be sensitive to the patient’s reasoning for not wanting a test done. I must also understand I should take the time to educate patients about the objective of screening tests and the ways in which early detection allows treatment to be more successful. Care-focused nursing is about prevention and reducing the morbidity or mortality of groups who are at risk for specific diseases or conditions.
The purpose of MSN Essential IV is to encourage nursing students to incorporate scholarship within practice. Applying what I have learned is what will me make me a true professional. There is no reason for me to learn nursing concepts, methods, and interventions if I’m not going to use them. The assignment that taught me the most about integrating scholarship into my service in healthcare is the Week 6 paper. I chose arthritis because many of my patients suffer from this condition. I found it a great opportunity to study a condition that I presently deal with, so I can get some answers about how to alleviate some of my patients’ discomfort. I found many helpful resources and evidence-based methods to help me perfect my fall prevention program idea. The research methods I read about in Week three and four’s required readings reiterated the importance of reading case studies and becoming a part of a case-study, cohort study, any type of research design study team. To jump to my point, I learned how to create a comprehensive assessment checklist on how to evaluate and assess the patient for being at risk for falls. The information that I gather from assessments and questionnaires will make a difference in how interventions and treatment plans are executed. Research methods force researchers to adhere to transparency and accuracy goals (Šimundić, 2013). Everything about conducting research matters, data collection, analysis, interpretation; even the publication the article is published in (Šimundić, 2013).
There is a shift in health care services now that the role of the APN is transitioning into what it is meant to be, a viable role that improves quality care, improves health outcomes, and helps prevent unnecessary hospitalization (Salmond & Echevarria, 2017). NONPF #4 urges APNs to develop new practice methods are based on research, theory, and knowledge within practice. This is a required competency because it makes me a better nurse. It is what distinguishes me among the many nursing roles that are established to provide services to patient populations. I have yet to develop a new practice method because I am still learning. I believe the confidence to do this will come after I graduate and have been in my field for a few years. Then, I think it will come naturally. I have watched advanced practice nurses in the field, and I notice they have a confidence about themselves and their nursing skills. I am feeling more confident with the completion of every class because I will soon be put in positions in which I will have to act on what I have learned.
