Laboratory Worksheet – Thermal Energy

In this activity you will complete a hands-on experiment to determine how temperatures of water change

Pre- Lab Demonstrations:

1. Watch the demonstration lab by at the front of the room. As the spoon is heated by the candle what happens to the butter at on the spoon? What would happen with a wood spoon? Write your observation.

2. Desk Lamp – Go up to the lamp set up in the middle of the room. Put your hand 3-4 inches away from the bulb. What do you observe? Write your observation below.

3. Handle an ice cube. What do you observe? Write your observation below.

Watch the videos of the Storm over Miami and the Lava Lamp. Write your observations.

Pre-lab Questions:

1. What is temperature?

2. How are thermal energy and temperature related?

3. What is the difference between thermal energy and heat?

4. What is conduction, convection, and radiation?

Hypothesis

Before you begin your lab, review the procedures. Then write a hypothesis that reflects what you think will happen to the water temperature. Record your hypothesis as an “if, then” statement.

Materials

· Hot water, Cold water, Foam cups, Thermometer, Measuring cups

· Procedure

1. Gather materials.

2. Measure 100 ml of hot water and 100 ml of cold water into separate foam cups.

3. Use a thermometer to measure the temperature of hot water and the cold water. Record your prediction for the final temperature of mixed water.

4. Pour the hot and cold water into a third foam cup.

5. Allow some time for the thermometer to reach a final temperature, then measure the temperature of the water. Record the temperature in the data table.

6. Repeat for a total of two trials.

Data

Record the temperature reading for each trial.

Trial

Temperature of hot water (ºC)

Temperature of cold water (ºC)

Predicted Temperature (ºC)

Temperature of final mixture (ºC)

Trial 1

Trial 2

Average

Post-Lab Questions

1. Review your data. Did your experiment support your hypothesis? Explain your answer.

2. Using the average temperatures, what were the changes in water temperatures?

3. Describe the changes in kinetic energy of the water (movement of water molecules) before and after mixture.

4. Was the temperature of the final mixture closer to the temperature of the hot water or cold water?

5. Think about the two pre-lab demonstrations. Where do these demonstrations fit in with our discussions of thermal energy, conduction, convection, and radiation?

6. Please take another look at the Essential Questions at the top of the page and answer them below.

7. How does the learning above relate to the Desk Lamp, Spoon and Butter, Storm over Miami, Ice Cube in your hand, and the Lava Lamp?
