Future Nursing Role

An evolving problem is the nursing shortage. Statistics indicate that the shortage may hit 340, 000 by the year 2020 (Snavely, 2016). The major cause of the shortage is the influx of patient into the health system, educational bottlenecks, and retirement of the baby boomers. There is also a delay in filling the nursing positions to match the increased demand. The nursing schools across the country cannot meet the rising demand for care after the healthcare reform.
The effect of nursing shortages can be felt across the healthcare system. Nurses have increased work especially in the emergency rooms which are always overcrowded. The effects are increased wait times for patients and increased chances of nurses making mistakes due to pressure (Buerhaus, Skinner, Auerbach & Staiger, 2017). Patients risk being discharged prematurely and the mortality may also increase. Doctors are also strained as they try to lower the amount of time spent on patients to optimize profit and balance the needs of the hospitals and insurance companies. Healthcare institutions are also negatively impacted as they must offer competitive salaries to attract nurses. Overworked nurses are experiencing burnout and frustration increasing the turnover rates and costing the healthcare industry an annual loss of $4.2 million.
Nurse shortage is important for the advanced practice nurse because they are among the qualified personnel who can boost the faulty members needed in nursing education. They are in charge of educating aspiring nurses to help in meeting the increased demands and replace the retiring baby boomers. Teaching positions require a higher level of education and experts in the field (Squires et al., 2017). There is a shortage of nurse educators in underserved areas which limit the accessibility of nursing school to potential students. The APRNs have the necessary skills and qualification and can fill up faculties and help aspiring nurses actualize their dreams thereby reducing the nursing shortage.
Conclusion
APRNs are nurses with masters and doctoral degrees. They serve as primary care providers and ensures that preventive care reaches the public. The personal future role is that of a nurse educator that will cover teaching and guiding learners as well as developing programs of study.  To achieve this objective, there is a need to complete either a masters or doctoral course, get a certification and accrue clinical experience. The objectives can be met by joining organizations like ANA, NLN, and PNEG. However, the ideal organization that aligns with personal philosophy is NLN due to its capability to foster competency in the field of nurse educators.  An evolving problem that would require great input from APRN revolves around nurse shortage. It is a looming problem that can be handled by the APRN who have the right education and qualification to join various faculties.

Lydia Hall’s theory centers around the concepts of core, care, and cure. The core is the patient who needs nursing care that is nurturing providing comfort. The nurse provides care directed at biological functions, educating the patient, and providing help in activities that the patient is unable to perform. The cure is attention from the health care team including nursing that assists in the healing process of the core (Care, Core, and Cure: the Three Cs of Lydia Hall, 2021). Subrata (2019) discusses the use of Lydia Hall’s theory to treat pressure ulcers in the community. The nurse would provide teaching, nursing care, and collaborate with an interdisciplinary team to treat decubiti. Another interesting theory is that of Katherine Kolcaba. This theory is centered around comfort described as relief, ease, and transcendence. A holistic approach is used to achieve comfort through the physical, psychospiritual, social, and environmental areas (Comfort Theory by Katharine Kolcaba, 2021).  Comfort or relief can be achieved through physical means in the form of catheterizing a patient who has urinary retention. the removal of urine eases the discomfort of a full bladder.  Transcendence is then achieved as the patient can see beyond their biological issues. Both theories could be utilized to encourage change through education (Hall’s theory) and showing the patient-specific actions that can lead to their comfort (Kolcaba’s theory). Both theories could be applied to practice as they deal with direct care of the patient. Hall’s theory focuses on the care and cure of the core or patient. This is the essential part of nursing.  Care is provided to patients in a manner that can lead to healing. Kolcaba’s theory suggests that patient care should come from a desire to create a state of comfort for the patient. This is a desirous situation for nursing for all patients. These two theories describe one particular perspective of nursing. While they are descriptive of nursing, they are not all-encompassing and do not cater to an individual patient. Patient care should be individualized. These theories are an important aspect of care that can be taught to future nurses.  From an ethical point of view, individualized care for each patient is important in order to develop a rapport that can assist the patient in their health care needs. Since no two individuals are alike, it is important to include the patient in an individualized plan.

I agree with you Camille that Lydia Hall’s theory prioritizes core, care, and cure. The model refers to the patient as the core, nursing response as the care, and then the positive outcome as the cure. Nurses provide care through various activities within their limits. Topic 3 Discussion 1: Health Disparities
The issues of health disparities have received extensive documentation in the United States. The Healthy People 2020 describes health inequality as a certain kind of health difference that has its roots in social, environmental and economic disadvantage. To this end, African-Americans belong to this category and they have the most vulnerability to matters of health disparity. Studies reveal that these people have a high-likelihood of suffering insurance, face impediment to accessing health care, and have predominance of certain disease conditions in comparison to the Whites (Asiedu et al., 2015). Thus, my focus as a nurse educator will be on this group.
Nurse educators play a fundamental role to the promotion of health and prevention of disease in vulnerable communities. One of the most important roles that nurse educators can undertake entails engaging nursing students on the need to identify disparities. In addition, they should teach the nurses on the necessity of working to eliminate such disparities (World Health Organization, 2016). Moreover, nurse educators can reestablish the capacity for caring as well as relational and social practice via the transformation of nursing education based on the mutuality principle. The development of such competency remarkably increases the capacity of nurses to address the issue of health inequity in the African-American population. Lastly, nurse educators can conduct policy-geared research to improve access of African-Americans to care. Such research work can influence federal and state-government policies towards this objective.
Moreover, the issue of health disparity have causative influences such as diversity and the global perspectives of care. Diversity plays a significant role in the creation of health equity due to the increase of minority population. By the year 2040, statistics reveal that almost 45% of the population will be minorities chief among them African-Americans (Bouye, McLeary, & Williams, 2016). Thus, this calls for increase in diversity of healthcare professionals to address the issue of inequality. Moreover, the global perspective of healthcare also demands that healthcare professionals become diverse so as to ensure that the diverse global population receive the necessary care without prejudice. Therefore, the existence of diversity and global perspectives influence the creation of cultural competence among nurses so as to improve equity among African-American population.
