I think the first key element of the PPACA is that one of its goals was to ensure healthcare for the citizens of the United States. To make sure this goal was successful, the federal government put in place subsidies for healthcare. I picked this as a positive effect on the country because I think the citizens of this country need healthcare and affordable prices. I think the PPACA does just that. Another critical factor of the act that I believe will be positive for this country is that people with pre-existing conditions cannot be denied insurance coverage. Insurance companies have been known not to allow people to be covered who had pre-existing conditions in the past. If so, it was hard to get the insurance company to pay for a procedure and prove to them that you did not previously have this condition. I think this is a positive step for our country. Thirdly, if you are an employer and you have fifty or more employees, you are required to offer them insurance. I think this is great because I think when people are employed they want a benefits package that includes healthcare. People have families and want to ensure that they can have some sort of insurance plan for their families. I think this is a positive factor of the PPACA and will have a positive effect on healthcare in the United States for families that work for small businesses.
In my opinion, I don’t think people should be fined for not having health insurance; however, I understand why that rule is in place. Hospitals have taken the responsibility of not turning away sick patients in the emergency room department, and I think the PPACA was put into effect to try to counteract people going to the emergency room without healthcare, but I don’t people should be forced to get healthcare. I think it should be a choice. I think forcing people to have healthcare and having them to pay a fine if they don’t will have a negative impact on healthcare in the United States because some people can’t afford health care no matter the cost and certainly cannot afford to be fined. Another negative impact of the PPACA is that fewer insurance companies are participating in the PPACA. In the beginning, there were better insurance companies to choose from, but now there are fewer choices. Also, there were PPO plans that allowed a patient to go to any Doctor they wanted even if that Doctor was in another state. If an insured person had lived in Georgia, that insured person could still choose a provider in Florida. Now that is not the case. This is an adverse effect of the PPCA in the healthcare sector in the United States. Now the insured person is only limited to their state because there are not PPO plans, at least in Georgia. Lastly, the premiums for a decent healthcare plan is over $100 and does not include dental or vision. A dental plan is purchased separately, and a vision plan is purchased separately, which makes the premiums even more expensive. Some medications are overpriced; at the beginning of the year until the deductibles have been met. Some medicines allow co-pay cards that reduce the price of some medicines for the entire year.
What is healthcare? Healthcare is the quality of professionalism and cares that healthcare professionals provide to the customers; such as Doctors, Nurses, Physical Therapists, Imaging Technologists, CNAs, HHAs, Director of Nursing, etc. These healthcare specialists work collectively as a group to provide quality care to patients. My definition of healthcare is the same as it was the first time as I posted it the first time. What I would add is having healthcare insurance. Without health care insurance, then there would not be health care in the United States of America. There are different levels of healthcare insurance based on each need and their budget. Some individuals cannot afford healthcare. I think healthcare will be advanced to the point to where a patient will be able to facetime their doctor instead of going into the actual office. I believe that with computer cameras, the Doctor’s will be able to see what he/she needs to see on the patient via a webcam. For the Doctor the get the patient’s vital signs, I believe technology would have advanced to where there will be a gadget on the computer that lets the laptop gather this information such as the patient’s blood pressure, oxygen, pulse rate, and temperature. According to Leadership +, Lauren Philips wrote an article, and she believes that a new system will be available that will allow patients to be at home, at work or school, and even travelling that will enable them to use an online mobile system to interact with a Doctor.

I also see healthcare in a negative place for United States citizens. If your employer does not offer you insurance, then in the next year or so there is a possibility the ACA will not be around as we know it today. “The individual mandate, under the 2010 ACA will end next year, per the Tax Cuts and Job Act passed by Congress and signed into law by President Trump” (K@W). Had the individual mandate stayed in place, if a person did not already have insurance through their employer or another government program such as Medicaid or Medicare, then one would have had to purchase a health care plan or be fined. The elimination of the mandate will start in 2019. The Opioid pandemic has become a problem in the United States; therefore, the government has got to address the issue with opioids. The government has already started to crack down on Doctor’s giving out prescriptions to patients. The laws are a lot tougher now. I know this for a fact because I used to be on higher doses of opioids, but it all changed last year, and I had no problem with it because I understood. I just thought that there had to be a better way because some people do go to doctors and say certain parts of their body hurts to get pain pills. The back is their favorite part because you cannot detect back pain on an x-ray because it can be a muscle strain or just muscle pain. This makes it hard for the people who really need pain pills. I thought it was as simple as looking at a patient’s chart and seeing results of actual injuries that showed up on MRIs, Cat Scans, or X-rays. It wasn’t that simple. The Doctors were told to stop writing certain pain pills, and they did. Opioid reform will be much tougher.
