For the Discussion Board: Platos allegory illustrates how an individual matures to a knowledge of the truth. Platos philosophy held that our physical earth was filled with shadows and approximations, while the world of Ideas or Forms (in some ways like the Christian heaven) contained the realm of truth, of absolutes. The setting of the story is a cave filled with prisoners chained in such a way that they can only see shadows on the wall before them, illuminated by a fire behind them. Throughout their lives, they observe and discuss the shadow images. One day, a prisoner breaks free, turns around, sees what is going on, and emerging from the cave, sees all the things never seen before (color, three-dimensionality, the source of light, etc.). He descends back into the cave and tries to convince his comrades that what they have been viewing throughout their lives is not real. As you continue to read, you will learn their responses to this freed prisoner.
How do you see Platos allegory playing out in your personal life? Have you ever been in the same situation as the freed prisoner? Do you believe the freed prisoner was morally obligated to descend back into the cave and try to liberate the other prisoners? How do you describe the freed prisoners new disposition? Do you see any significance in the details concerning his eyes, how they were pained by the true light, and how they were confused and disoriented when he descended back into the darkness of the cave?
