Nursing practice problems and medical practice problems are both similar and different. Nursing practice problems typically revolve around the patients care. It may be related to how the patient is feeling regarding a medical diagnosis. A medical practice problem can be linked to the symptoms of a diagnosis or the steps leading to the diagnosis. One example of a nursing practice problem is a patient being in emotional distress after getting news that they are septic and in heart failure. A medical practice problem is providing necessary sepsis protocol hydration not overloading patient. “The word PICOT is a mnemonic derived from the elements of a clinical research question – patient, intervention, comparison, outcome and (sometimes) time” (Duquesne University School of Nursing Online, 2020).
