DQ2 Adhering to ethical principles and protection of human
subjects are important considerations in
all forms of research. How stringent or similar
should these ethical principles be to the standards placed on the
conduction of clinical and/or educational research? Offer examples where
controversy exists regarding application of ethical principles in evidence-based
practice projects, best practices in education versus clinical research? Be
sure to address HIPAA and FERPA depending on your focus – clinical practice vs
academic education.
Evidence-based practice results from using the most current research completed by healthcare professionals that can improve care, healthcare costs, and patient satisfaction. Nursing leaders use research in nursing practices to improve decisions that need to be based on clinical appropriateness (Boswell & Cannon, 2022).
A nursing practice problem can include issues related to the nursing practice while considering a patient’s emotion, quality of care, and attitude toward the health promotion of their condition. Nursing practice problems are precisely related to nursing practice and include issues with medication errors, procedural issues during care provided, and quality of assessments, to name a few. A medical practice problem, however, is more focused on assisting patients through the healing process for their illness and focuses on tests and medications to relieve symptoms of a condition. With the medical practice problem, a physician looks at the overall attempt to cure an illness. In contrast, a nursing practice problem focuses on emotional support and providing the appropriate medical care associated with a medical diagnosis (Hardy, 2022). One example of a nursing problem would be increased pressure injuries on a unit. Nursing would need to identify the cause and seek a resolution. An example of a medical problem would be determining which medication to use for a patient with consistent urinary tract infections and who has become resistant to popular medications used for this condition.
When developing a patient population/problem, intervention, comparison, outcome, and time (PICOT), it is essential to ensure that it is related to a nursing practice problem. This is because it has to be relevant to what a nurse can change within their scope to improve patient outcomes, cost, and patient satisfaction.
