Nurse advocates watch out for their patients’ best interests while also keeping a respectful relationship with their patients’ family. They take part in meetings of the healthcare team with the patient and the patient’s family in order to explain any challenges in communication and to make certain that appropriate information is supplied. The rights of all patients, including children, the unconscious, the ignorant, the illiterate, and those suffering from mental illness, are protected by nurse advocates. This includes those patients who are unaware of their surroundings, uneducated, ignorant, and illiterate. It is the responsibility of the nurse advocate to communicate patient decisions and needs to other members of the healthcare team, and in some cases, to the relatives of the patients as well. Effective advocacy raises the overall standard of care that is offered to patients and broadens the purview of nursing as a profession.
