Advocacy, as it pertains to client care, is important because it speaks on behalf of the patient, as well as reduces the chance of possible harm to come to the patient. Advocating for patients is part of our nursing standards of the nursing practice. It is our obligation as nurses to safeguard patients, not judge, be empathetic, and defend the patients’ wishes regardless of if we agree with them or not. Knowing patients have someone working for their best interest eases their discomfort and stress allowing the patient to concentrate on their health and healing (UNM, 2019).
A nurse’s role in advocacy includes pleading the cause of another. Nurses advocate by maintaining dignity, promoting equality, and delivering them from suffering. Nurses have the closest contact with patients it is logical that they should be the ones to defend the rights, safety, and health of patients. Advocating requires competence, courage, and compassion (Loyola University Chicago, 2018). It is an influential role that has transmitted the nursing profession into one of the most trusted professions (Loyola University Chicago, 2018).
I was working in the emergency room when a patient in her late 80’s came in with a bleeding scalp wound, the doctor came in and evaluated her stitched up her scalp, and asked her if she had any other complaints. The woman said “no,” The doctor said “good, good, if you need anything let us know” and he left the room. I began cleaning the blood off of her and noticed that she was protecting her chest area, so I too asked her if she was okay and that I noticed her protecting her chest area. She said she was okay and didn’t notice she was protecting it. I asked if she would be okay if I had a peek at it to see if I could find anything wrong. She complied and I began to change her bloody nightgown for a clean hospital gown. I noticed her chest had a large bump and was swollen and a little red. I told her I would be right back, I wanted to let the doctor know about the bump, redness, and swelling so he could re-evaluate her. It turns out she had broken her sternum in the fall. I don’t think she would have said anything about her chest while she was there, she didn’t seem to be in much discomfort. By advocating for the patient, I got the doctor to re-evaluate her and order an x-ray to discover the break. I cannot say what repercussions she may have encountered other than more pain later on. Most broken sternums just heal with rest over time. Of course, some puncture the lung and cause serious life-threatening problems. I was just pleased they were able to catch it before she left. They ended up keeping her for observation.
