An example of such policies is the Health Care Reform Act of 2010. The act was adopted with the aim of ensuring that individuals from ethnic minorities in America accessed their needed care. The act also implied that the model of healthcare provision was transformed in the state to cover for the increasing patient population. The adoption of the Affordable Care Act increased the access of care by both individuals from ethnic minorities and non-minority persons who are unemployed. These changes have a significant impact on the US healthcare system. Besides the increase in the utilization of healthcare services, there is anticipated utilization of new methods of determining quality. These methods include the use of measurement metrics such as level of disease burden in the community, utilization of preventive services, and the health literacy level of the public. Therefore, it is critical to examine the roles and responsibilities of the healthcare management in addressing the complexities presented by the changes in the healthcare landscape in the state.
As shown above, the adoption of the healthcare reforms in 2010 created significant impacts on the healthcare system. Healthcare organizations can achieve consistent and effective use of technologies by providing up to date training to their workforce. Health care institutions also have to invest in new infrastructure that would promote sustained use of the new technologies (Rubino, 2018). Cumulatively, these demand the use of significant financial resources in health organizations for both human resource and infrastructural development, hence, the impact of the reforms.
The adoption of healthcare reforms also present significant challenges related to patient demographics. As shown earlier, the reforms aim at increase access to care and utilization by the diverse populations in the state. This change is expected to improve the health and wellbeing of the vulnerable populations in the state. For instance, the reforms saw most of the individuals from poor socioeconomic backgrounds improve their access to care. There has also been an increase in the provision of the insurance coverage to unemployed individuals irrespective of their ethnicities or socioeconomic backgrounds. The demographic changes in the access to healthcare imply that there is anticipated increase in the utilization of healthcare services. There is also the anticipated rise in the spending of the government on healthcare. Therefore, rather than reducing the costs spent on healthcare, analysts are worried that the reforms will increase healthcare costs further (Rice et al., 2014). Consequently, the hospitals face the challenge of ensuring optimum performance in them while addressing the diverse healthcare needs of the changing demographics of those they serve.
In summary, the adoption of healthcare reforms was perceived to be a great step in improving the quality of care offered to populations in America. The decision also aimed at increasing the access, affordability, and utilization of healthcare services. Despite these benefits, there are increasing concerns on the adverse impacts that the reforms have on healthcare. The reforms demand the use of new technologies to promote high quality and safe care. The technologies are also needed to ensure protection of patient’s vital information. There is also the need for infrastructural transformations that are needed to support new technologies for value-based outcomes. The reforms also translate into a change in patient demographics in the state. Therefore, institutions of healthcare must constantly explore the manner in which these issues can be addressed to promote efficiency in their operations and promotion of quality in healthcare.

Scenario: Pursuant to the 2010 Health Care Reform Bill, the United States will be challenged to bring into its health care population some 32 million more patients. Formerly, many of these patients were uninsured. Some of these patients were seen and treated in safety-net hospitals, but mostly in emergency rooms. In the near future, the health of the community will be measured in terms of low disease burden, high vaccination rates, controlled chronic disease rates, healthier life styles, and a better educated public. Clearly, the impacts to the health care system will have to be addressed.

Hello Class,
Access to good health care is limited by a number of factors. These disparities include race or ethnicity, sex, sexual identity, age, disability, socioeconomic status, and geographic location (Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion, 2020). The biggest disparities my facility deals with is the socioeconomic status and geographic location. The latest census bureau information has 13.1% of the population living in poverty (United States Census Bureau, 2020). The majority of our patients have Medicaid, Medicare, or both. We also have a large uninsured Amish and Mennonite community.
My hospital has a financial assistance program for our uninsured patients. I am not sure how this program works, but there are discounts available for these patients. This program has been in place for a very long time and seems to work well. We do write off hundreds of thousands of dollars each year as charity care as well. We have recently started a program to help home bound patients get to their medical appointments, by using the ambulance service to transport. This program is new, and we are working to make the public aware of it. When a patient uses this service, the insurance will be billed so it is very important to have all of the paperwork completed so that insurance will cover the ambulance transport. The handful of patients that have used it have had very positive reactions.
We have several rural health clinics throughout the county so that patients do not need to travel as far for appointments. We also work with larger facilities to bring specialty providers to the patient. The nearest cardiologist is roughly sixty miles away, so bringing the specialist to our facility is a great service to the patients. We have used telehealth as well. This is used for weekend physician coverage on our inpatient floor. An advanced practice practitioner, that is local, works with an e-hospitalist to manage our observation, acute, and skilled patients. This allows us to keep more patients at the local hospital, which allows the family to be close by.
My facility uses a combination of government mandated and self-initiatives to lessen the impact of the socioeconomic and geographic location disparities.
