Sometimes patients find themselves in situations where they need someone to rescue them. Two days ago at my workplace, a patient was admitted to have a coronary angiogram. While doing her intake pre-procedure, she stated that her girlfriend was her next of king who should be contacted for any information regarding her procedure and who was waiting in the waiting room. Our current visitor policy is that only one visitor is allowed to visit a patient with the exception of patients who are terminally ill with expected eminent death. Post procedure, I got a call from the front desk that the patient had a visitor and if we can allow him to visit with the patient. I asked for the visitor’s name to confirm with the patient even though she already had her girlfriend with her in the recovery area. The patient told me that the visitor was her boyfriend who had refused to bring her for her appointment for some other engagement, so she had to ask her girlfriend to bring her for her appointment. She stated that maybe he felt guilty afterwards and now here to see her and she didn’t want him to come in to see her at all and that she was ok with her girlfriend being there with her. I had to let the front desk staff know that the patient already have one visitor and that he will have to call her girlfriend on the phone or wait in the car for her until she was discharged. He was furious and very mad but the front desk security staff was firm and he reluctantly left. When this information was relayed to the patient, she was so happy and thank me for doing that. This little act of kindness or support to the patient was in some form advocating for my patient and that gave her a peace of mind throughout her recovery time.
