Substance abuse is the most common psychopathological problem in the United States (Nies, 2019). Putnam County Ohio has a population of 33,861 people and has an above average rate for smoking, alcohol use, and heroin use compared to the state of Ohio rates. 34.2% smoking rate for Putnam Co and 28.9% for state of Ohio, 0.47% heroin rate for Putnam co and 0.33% rate for state of Ohio, and 6.1% alcohol rate for Putnam co and 5.8% for state of Ohio (SAMHSA). There was a total of 11 drug overdoses in Putnam Co and 38 total in the state of Ohio. I feel like 11 in this county is greater than I would have expected since the county is a farm community with low unemployment rate and high median income rate. I guess this proves that money and location does not prevent substance abuse. It is sad to me that my county does not offer more treatment options for these patient’s. A suboxone clinic is available approximately 25 miles away and a few local family physicians will prescribe suboxone once patient is initiated and stable on the treatment. Otherwise, inpatient therapy is approximately 70 – 80 miles away. Patient’s that battle substance abuse often have little to no support and battle a mental health issue of some sort. Substance abuse therapy is proven to be more successful when a family member or close friend is involved in the therapy and is supportive and motivating to the patient (Nies, 2019).
The healthcare organization that I work at offers a suboxone clinic, a substance abuse treatment plan. There are other options in the area that offer these services also. Suboxone (methadone) is given to treat opioid abuse, which since 2017, overdose deaths of opioids, specifically heroin, have increased (drug abuse.gov). These facilities evaluate and treat patients with suboxone. The patient’s follow a strict treatment program of mental health therapy and medication treatment (suboxone clinic). Patient’s in Putnam county can get their therapy and medication initiated at the clinic then once the patient is stable, can transfer to a local family physician in the area for follow up treatment and care. They even offer virtual visits with the provider and or counselor to help patient’s that do not always have transportation.
“Community health nurses should be familiar with physical surroundings and their mutual interaction with cultural realities, social relations, economic circumstances, and political conditions of communities, applying a critical perspective to community health” (Nies, 2019). Nurses play a vital role in patient care. They need to understand the communities needs and wants. By collecting data and surveys, issues are noticed, and community health nurses can connect with the community. Once data is collected, community health nurses can initiate programs pertaining to needs of the community. Nurses also perform physical exams and assessments which can lead to diagnosing substance abuse issues. Community health nurses offer education and resources and can partner with other local businesses and programs within the community to promote and treat substance abuse issues. These nurses then work together with agencies like the suboxone clinic to refer a patient for treatment and offer other services like transportation also. Follow up with the clinic and patient offers data that supports if the services are effective or not and determines what other services and resources need offered.

Then take a moment to review the Twitter feed for compelling Tweets that may have an impact on or discuss the population health problem.
Give an overview of any agency, organization, person, or affiliation that is addressing the population health problem.

Discussion Questions (DQ)
Initial responses to the DQ should address all components of the questions asked, include a minimum of one scholarly source, and be at least 250 words.

I encourage you to incorporate the readings from the week (as applicable) into your responses.
Weekly Participation
Your initial responses to the mandatory DQ do not count toward participation and are graded separately.
In addition to the DQ responses, you must post at least one reply to peers (or me) on three separate days, for a total of three replies.
Participation posts do not require a scholarly source/citation (unless you cite someone else’s work).
Part of your weekly participation includes viewing the weekly announcement and attesting to watching it in the comments. These announcements are made to ensure you understand everything that is due during the week.
APA Format and Writing Quality
Familiarize yourself with APA format and practice using it correctly. It is used for most writing assignments for your degree. Visit the Writing Center in the Student Success Center, under the Resources tab in LoudCloud for APA paper templates, citation examples, tips, etc. Points will be deducted for poor use of APA format or absence of APA format (if required).
Cite all sources of information! When in doubt, cite the source. Paraphrasing also requires a citation.
I highly recommend using the APA Publication Manual, 6th edition.
Use of Direct Quotes
I discourage overutilization of direct quotes in DQs and assignments at the Masters’ level and deduct points accordingly.
As Masters’ level students, it is important that you be able to critically analyze and interpret information from journal articles and other resources. Simply restating someone else’s words does not demonstrate an understanding of the content or critical analysis of the content.
It is best to paraphrase content and cite your source.

Late Policy
The university’s policy on late assignments is 10% penalty PER DAY LATE. This also applies to late DQ replies.
Please communicate with me if you anticipate having to submit an assignment late. I am happy to be flexible, with advance notice. We may be able to work out an extension based on extenuating circumstances.
If you do not communicate with me before submitting an assignment late, the GCU late policy will be in effect.
I do not accept assignments that are two or more weeks late unless we have worked out an extension.
As per policy, no assignments are accepted after the last day of class. Any assignment submitted after midnight on the last day of class will not be accepted for grading.
