Nurse anesthetists and Nurse practitioners are the two different advanced registered nurse roles I will be comparing. Nurse practitioners operate as the primary health care providers offering nursing services to patients and their families. In this role, the nurses examine the patients in order to determine the proper and effective strategies to deal with the patients’ conditions (DeNisco, 2019). On the other hand, Nurse Anesthetists’ primary role is administration of anesthesia as well as provision of the necessary care on and after major medical procedures. One of the main commonalities in these two ARNP roles is provision of care to the patients and their families. It is worth noting that nurses in both roles have the authority to prescribe painkillers. Therefore, it is clear that the ethical guidelines that govern these roles are similar. In particular, the roles have the same nursing ethical provision. According to the second provision of the nurse’s code of ethics, the nurse’s main concern is on the patient either individually or as group (Gaines, 2021). Nonetheless, despite the commonalities in the roles, I do believe that one role might respond differently in certain situations. For instance, while nurse anesthetists have the legal and ethical autonomy to administer anesthesia without supervision, the other roles lack the freedom.

Advanced registered nurses work in highly collaborative environments and must collaborate with interdisciplinary teams in order to provide excellent patient care. Besides knowing the role and scope of one’s own practice, it is essential to understand the role and scope of other nurse specialties to ensure effective collaboration among nurses, the organization, and other professionals with whom advanced registered nurses regularly interact.
Use the “Nursing Roles Graphic Organizer Template” to differentiate how advanced registered nurse roles relate to and collaborate with different areas of nursing practice. Compare your future role with one of the following: nurse educator; nurse leader; family nurse practitioner; acute care nurse practitioner; graduate nurse with an emphasis/specialty in public health, health care administration, business, or informatics; clinical nurse specialist; doctor of nursing practice. Indicate in the appropriate columns on the template which roles you are comparing.
