2. Is/are position(s) supported with evidence and examples, including supporting quotes?
“Show, don’t tell”: Does the paper clearly illustrate what the author is writing about through data and examples?
Are authoritative sources quoted or paraphrased in a manner that lends credence to the author’s case?
3. Does the author/paper successfully demonstrate understanding of the content and research?
This can be tricky to answer. Be honest but sensitive: Do you think the author sufficiently comprehends the topic based on what you have read?
Note that sufficient comprehension doesn’t necessarily mean that you agree with their conclusions; rather, do they understands the basics
4. Is the structure of—and the logic in—the paper sound? Do the arguments make sense?
Here, especially, consider the logic of the arguments: If the reasoning is valid and if the data presented as factual are is accurate, the truth-claims should, logically speaking, be sound
Are you able to follow the arguments? In your view are fallacies employed?
5. Are the quotations, in-text citations, and sources properly formatted in APA style?
This is more my job than yours, and I do not expect proofreading, but: Does the paper follow the basic standards of an APA paper?
Do you see major examples of un-cited or improperly cited materials?
6. The so-called “So what?” factor: In the conclusion, is the significance of what is being discussed addressed?
In other words, does the author highlight why this paper and its conclusions are important?
Is this topic important to you, and if not, can you see how it might be important to others? And if so, who might those others be?
