The definition of a nurse, which stipulates that “a nurse is somebody who cares for a sick person”, makes the profession look simplistic. However, the nursing profession is much more than that. Generally, nursing is an influential and fulfilling profession. Fundamentally, nurses participate in caring for people in numerous aspects such as public health promotion and disease prevention. Thus, nursing principally entails helping the society and for one to become a nurse, they need to have the desire to become one and succeed while at it. Further, it needs one to have an open mind, strong, thoughtful, determined, and caring. The profession of nursing also have numerous assumptions and beliefs, all of which converge to advance the causes of the profession. Further, the various domains of nursing such as the helping role, the teaching-coaching function, and the diagnostic and monitoring function among others play a fundamental role in formulating one’s personal philosophy. Therefore, accurately defining nursing, examining the assumptions and beliefs of nursing and analyzing and defining the multifarious domains of nursing are important in influencing a person’s personal philosophy of nursing.
