NURS 6003 Assignment: Academic Success and Professional Development Plan Part 1: Developing an Academic and Professional Network
Assignment: Academic Success and Professional Development Plan Part 1: Developing an Academic and Professional Network
Part One of Week One: My Academic and Professional Network
When nursing students begin college, they are typically gray in many areas, and professional knowledge develops as they learn concepts in their respective fields and network with peers. Academic and professional support are required for nurses to successfully complete their degrees. Professional collaboration increases this support. Interprofessional collaboration is essential in nursing because it allows nurses to interact socially and professionally while working in groups (Moss et al., 2016). It promotes the exchange of information and resources. Networking broadens one’s sphere of influence.
Professional networking, according to Goolsby and Knestrick (2017), allows nurses to communicate with people who share their interests and experiences. It creates new opportunities by fostering collaboration. Interdisciplinary networking, according to Khanum et al. (2016), provides nurses with contacts for personal growth and for developing contacts that help them become better providers of patient care. This section of my strategy describes the academic and professional resources that I believe will be beneficial to my nursing program.
NURS 6003 Networking Opportunities
Adults with mental health issues long to understand why they suffer the way they do. Passion for assisting individuals struggling with mental health led to the question “Why?”. Researchers were interested in the impact Early Life Stress (ELS) has on individuals in adulthood. ELS is related to childhood and adolescence, where the victim is abused, neglected, or faced a significant loss. The study reviewed concluded that “depression in adulthood is related to situations of emotional abuse, sexual and physical neglect in childhood.” (Martins-Monteverde, Baes, Reisdorfer, Padovan, Tofoli, and Juruena, 2019). The results of this research provided a better understanding of how ELS can impact someone’s future.
My search began by visiting the Walden University Library and searching the databases appropriate for nursing research (Walden University Library, 2021). From there, I chose the APA PsycInfo database to explore “adult psychiatric patients.” A list of 497 articles came up, and this article was the one chosen. The database search was easy to use and provided an assortment of journals from which to choose. I would recommend the APA PsycInfo database for other graduate students researching mental health. In evaluating my resource, the journal article chosen shows accountability by being peer-reviewed, confirming the validity of the studies pulled from the APA PsycInfo database (Walden University Library, 2021).

Hi Sarah, I agree with you on the negative impact Early Life Stress (ELS) could have on the affected patients that we encounter daily in the nursing journey, this could lead to depression, anxiety, chronic stress symptoms, even post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and many more mental health issues.

Thanks Susan, for this great point about adult and depression. Reading through this post I was touch because it is the topic i have been so concern about when talking about adolescence. The trend at which adolescent are reporting depression is alarming. I wonder what is going on in our society because on looking at these group of individuals you can’t really find the reason why they are becoming depressed. Some live with their parent and gets all the support they need, but they are depressed. I think I need to do more research on this to have a better understanding of this situation.
Talking about the different databases in the Walden nursing library. once one is in this domain, there are multiple databases related to nursing that have been listed. One can find the same article in all the databases, but some have restriction, some may want you to create and account and sign-in or look through other sources which can be very frustrating if not sure on how to go about searching for articles in the library. Some of the databases are so easy to access in just a shot it gives you what you might be looking for in full text.
I love CINAHL, ProQuest, Medline, PubMed. When searching for peer reviewed databases, those with graduation hat in green such as “Ovid Nursing journals full text is a small collection of full text nursing journals” (Walden University Library, (n.d.). This database indicates all the journals are peer reviewed while those in yellow such as PubMed indicates that some are peer reviewed. This help when searching, so you can go directly to databases with peer reviewed journals thought it might not be a large collection of journals. Walden university library is so user friendly and so convenient.
Nurses should network to enhance their knowledge, get mentorship, and acquire the necessary support to overcome educational challenges. Networking allows nurses to develop a robust support system as they explore the medical field and share knowledge (NurseJournalStaff, 2021; Catalano, 2019). Due to the importance of networking towards my career success, the purpose of this section is to enable me identify and secure the participation of the following academic (at least two) and professional (at least two) individuals and/or teams to form the basis of my network. This network will help me to clarify my vision for success and will help guide me now and in the future.

Why I selected this individual and/or team and how they will support my success in the MSN program and as a practicing nurse:
Notes: I selected Dr. Amber Cook due to her closeness with students as an instructor. She is also highly experienced since she has worked in a variety of settings, including medical/surgical nursing, administration, mental health, care management, ED, and palliative care. Why I selected this individual and/or team and how they will support my success in the MSN program and as a practicing nurse:
I selected Dr. Williams because she is currently the Program Coordinator of the Adult-Gerontology Primary Care Nurse Practitioner Program at Walden University. She has more than 20 years of experience practicing nursing and advanced practice nursing and over 10 years of teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels (Walden University, 2020). Dr. Williams is known for her sincere passion for teaching and mentoring. Thus, she will be an ideal mentor since I am in the Adult-Gerontology Primary Care Nurse Practitioner Program.
Notes:
It will be essential to approach Dr. Williams and express my interest in Adult-Gerontology Primary Care Nursing. I will also request her to guide me throughout the program to gain the knowledge and attitude needed for a Adult-Gerontology Primary Care NP.
Why I selected this individual and/or team and how they will support my success in the MSN program and as a practicing nurse:
I selected Pogemiller because she is an Adult Health Nursing NP, which aligns with my future role. Pogemiller has a vast experience as an NP of over 10 years and is highly skilled in providing Adult Health Nursing. Besides, she is committed to providing high-quality care based on the best practice and clinical guidelines to achieve the best outcomes for patients. She can thus support me throughout the NP program and guide me in becoming a highly-skilled NP in the future.
Notes: I will approach Pogemiller and inform her of my current NP course in Adult Gerontology Primary Care. I will request her to be my professional mentor and guide me in steering through the course including the do’s and don’t’s of a Adult Gerontology NP.
My name is K for the past 13 years I have spent my nursing career in Geriatrics. I work and have always worked in skilled nursing or post-acute care. I found one of the aspects of my job that I enjoy the most is building relationships with patients and their families. It also allows a firsthand look at disease progression. The plan of care developed for the patient truly makes a difference in their quality of life.
The mission of Walden University to, “provide a diverse community of career professionals with the opportunity to transform themselves as scholar-practitioners so that they can effect positive social change, (Vision, Mission, and Goals).” I believe that transitioning into a practitioner role will allow me to make a positive change in the patients that I come in contact with. This step in furthering my career will also be a step in improving the level of care for the patients in my facility. Walden University’s values which include “quality, integrity, and student-centeredness” (Vision, Mission, and Goals) are almost identical to the values I have set for myself in my nursing career. I believe it is important to provide quality care in order to achieve a better health outcome for the patients I come into contact with. I treat my profession with integrity and adhere to moral standards. I attempt to build relationships so trust can be established.  Lastly, the value I find most important is, developing a patient centered approach to patient care. Each patient is individual in their needs and it is important to identify those needs in order to achieve the best clinical outcome for the patient.
One of the most formidable outcomes in the  Walden MSN Program is to acquire knowledge to positively impact their profession, communities, and society. A well-educated practitioner will have the knowledge and comprehension on health promotion and will transmit that to their patients and colleagues. Nurse Practitioners play an essential role in the care of patients and can optimize their health in even in the later part of life. I hope to gain all of this upon completion of the program.
