Being a Registered nurse for over ten years and having worked most of those years on a medical-surgical unit with a ratio of one to five or six patients, one must learn how to prioritize patient care. I started each shift by planning on how to take care of each patient individually through the course of my twelve-hour shift.  
By planning and prioritizing, it allowed for a better workflow and better time management as the hours went by. This also helped to not feel overwhelmed and burnt out for the rest of the shift.  
Healthcare is constantly changing with the help of evidence-based practice and technology. I believe that planning and prioritization was a great help to focus on where and what are imperative to be noted by charting it in the patient’s medical record, it also gave resources that can be passed on to the patients in minutes. 
I believe that using this same strategy towards learning will help tremendously. Classes being online and at your own pace, one might become distracted and lose focus. With constant planning and prioritization which will then help with better time management and staying focused to achieve set goals.
One strategy that I have not yet tried is being part of a study group. As this will be my first online learning and at your own pace, I am somewhat nervous about missing deadlines or missing important and vital information that might be of help to one’s success.  Having some classmates to study together and to hold each other accountable will be very helpful with planning, time management, studying and also effective technology use. My plan is to see who is open to this idea that lives in the same state or whoever is open to a zoom or facetime study group.

One of the strategies I implemented when enrolled in previous online learning environments was the ability to combine vision and execution. This skill is conducive to enhancing my ability to plan and time manage in each semester. By merging vision and execution, I can achieve and often surpass the course’s goals and set a coursework schedule that meshes with other obligations such as family and work. Organizing and balancing multiple schedules while also meeting the deadlines of the course have resulted in the completion of my online BSN and MSN degrees.
A strategy I could improve on is the ability to anticipate and mitigate pitfalls. I have previously set ambitious goals for myself and thus far have been able to achieve them due to my strong sense of persistence; however, when I don’t plan for probable pitfalls it usually results in lack of sleep and increased stress. As written by Zangerle (2021), “Many of you work in care settings that never close or are open for the majority of any 24-hour period. This contributes to long hours at work, many of which are scheduled and structured and some that aren’t… it’s those nonstructured hours that can derail your day. She encourages her students to expect the unexpected and learn to manage these derailers of time.”

One recurring example would be knowingly planning time to complete an assignment after a scheduled leadership forum at work. Roughly 50% of these forums result in aggressive action plans for fast-approaching deadlines to resolve organization-wide issues. Despite this probable pitfall, I still schedule the assignment time knowing it will be in addition to another project and create competing priorities.
By analyzing my schedules and proactively planning for pitfalls, I can then create mitigation strategies to avoid the negative consequences of these obstacles. A mitigation strategy for the mentioned example would be setting time earlier in the week to complete my assignment versus using my usual weekend days. This response may result in the need for flexing down an hour of work before leadership forum day or getting up an hour earlier to create uninterrupted time.

Blogs also serve as way to promote a community and collaborate learning approach through the sharing of ideas. Although they may function like a Discussion Board, the aim is to be more open-ended in nature and somewhat informal in sharing your perspectives and thoughts on a given prompt or idea.

Main question post. An effective academic strategy I have used from the past to the present involves planning ahead. Planning ahead is very beneficial to me as it allows me to prioritize and organize important aspects of my educational, work, and personal life, making it possible to adequately complete my day-to-day tasks in a timely and productive manner. Planning ahead ensures I will achieve important goals related to my personal life, work life, and school assignments. Planning ahead helps reduce stress by eliminating the anxiety of approaching deadlines. Planning ahead can allow the creation of technological documents that can be stored for future use (Park et al., 2017, pp. 1620–1630). Planning ahead gives me the peace of mind that I have effectively accomplished my goals, creating an excellent work-life balance.
       An academic strategy I have yet to try in the past that may benefit me is note-taking. Taking notes can enhance my academic strengths and decrease my weaknesses by allowing me to improve my time management skills and prioritize and organize important aspects of my educational, work, and personal life, making those tasks more manageable and achievable. Note-taking is also advantageous in helping comprehend information that may have been misinterpreted (Bellinger & DeCaro, 2019, pp. 2807–2819). Note-taking can help me keep records of data, allowing me to upload and save that information at a later time. Taking notes will also enable me to remember written information and enhance my academic strengths, which include memorizing information once I have written it. In conclusion, incorporating note-taking with my present educational strategy planning ahead will help me successfully advance my doctoral education here at Walden University.

My MSN degree was completed online. This was a novel teaching approach to me, and participating in it has helped me to expand my awareness. I was anxious initially, but as time went by, I felt more and more at ease with the principles and specifications of an online learning environment. Making sure that I devote enough “blocked time” to the class and coursework is one of the tactics that has proven to be extremely beneficial.
Time management keeps to-do lists from wasting one’s life (Rampton, 2020). Procrastination has been a victim of mine. However, since I have a strict deadline to produce discussions, answers, and assignments within a certain amount of time, I have had to work on my procrastination habits. The idea of online classes appealed to me because of the versatility it provided, particularly given my personal and professional obligations. I had to devote 30 hours a week to classwork as a family nurse. This freed me up to concentrate on my family as well as my professional obligations.
I have found that if you do not stick to your time allocation plan, you will get into trouble and will not be able to accomplish what you want in a timely manner. In some situations, I was tempted to put off working on the assignments and reading materials in the hope of finishing them later. However, I have found that online learning is much like attending a physical class in that I have to make time rather than try to find time to do these assignments.
I was able to stop procrastination and learn to complete assignments on time using the time management technique. When I regularly schedule hour time blocks to coursework, I find it easy to stay on top of my studying, as well as my personal and professional responsibilities. My work schedule used to be 8 hours a day, 5 days a week. I worked on my classwork for two to three hours a day for five days.
In addition, on my free days, which are usually Sundays, I spend some time planning ahead for the upcoming week. Within the online world, that technique has had a significant impact because it prevents me from being distracted by tasks that must be accomplished at the last minute, causing me to miss deadlines or to exhaust myself trying to get everything finished.

I think there are 2 strategies that I have not yet fully utilized up to now that could benefit me in the future.
My technological skills are not what I would like them to be and in a online environment, that can really set the student back. Walden University offers great technical support and they are available 24 hours seven days a week. I believe that a good bit of my time could be more effectively utilized for studying, if I would learn to better utilize the technical support that is available at Walden.
My frustration (or pride and ambition?) often leads me to get sidetracked in trying to solve technical issues that I could perhaps solve more easily with the help of Walden’s technical support or also outside professional help. Having a spare computer available also helps a lot in critical situations. Time management and use of technology go hand and hand and I still believe making better use of online time management tools would compensate some of my weaknesses and might be very beneficial.
Being an online student is not easy but I still believe that staying organized without the structure of traditional classroom settings can be improved with better use of your course syllabus as a guide, keeping a calendar and deadline reminders that mark off with the amount of work that you need to do each week, modifying the deadlines, where needed, logging into classroom frequently or even every day, so as not to miss any posted changes or announcements, all of which are key to better manage the stress associated with online learning.
One of my strengths, on the other hand, is my ease with interpersonal contacts and that, of course, gets almost lost in online learning. Frequent contact with the teacher and with other classmates is, in my opinion, an important strategy for success that one must not neglect in online learning. In previous classes, I spoke with teachers when I had a question that needed to be answered and I almost always found such a line of contact very helpful, both for the student and for the mentor in terms of mastering or improving on the delivery of the course.
It is critical to ask questions about vague content and unclear tasks, as well as other aspects of the research project. The online learning environment’s versatility allows questions to be answered at any time. On a personal level, forming a working relationship with the teacher would aid in the expansion of the professional network and the creation of potential references (Kirby Hall School, 2017).
I have built a few professional references through my MSN studying experience almost by accident, but I will try to put more effort into building up those personal relationships during the remainder of my online education. To keep improving on what I consider to be one of my stronger points, I plan to establish more, not less, personal relationships during this final part of my education and would hope to maintain those relationships past my student days and into my future professional career.
By Day 6 of Week 1

A strategy I implement in both academic and professional settings is organization. Each semester, I look at the course syllabus and calendar and write all the due dates down in my planner. This strategy helps me in many ways. First, it helps me visualize the flow of the semester.
Instead of wondering each week what assignments are due, I have it all in writing. Secondly, I can see what weeks I may be busier with work or social engagements and plan out my time better. In the beginning of my MSN program, I was not doing this. I was taking each week as it came, and this caused me to become stressed and overwhelmed, feeling that I had no control over my study schedule.
Planning out my semester also helps me plan my work schedule. I can see which weeks I may need to put more time into assignments and can plan my work schedule accordingly. I can also use this with my social calendar when planning events with family and friends. In the past, I have not done this, and have had to cancel plans because I had an important assignment due. With good organizational skills, I can avoid these extra stressors.
Throughout my MSN program, I wrote several scholarly papers and utilized research to express ideas. However, I feel this is something I can improve upon during my DNP program. Walden University (n.d.) emphasizes the importance of stating your opinion as a writer, but also “synthesizing the information from multiple sources to help persuade the reader.”
I feel I can improve upon utilizing the information I gain from my research within my ideas. Reflecting on past papers, I would state an idea, followed by a quote from my research to support that idea. In future papers, I can expand upon that by better synthesizing the information.
Synthesizing is not only offering information, but also using that information to “present new ideas” (Walden University, n.d.). I will utilize more than one research source to introduce a new idea. As I go through my DNP program, I will use synthesis to improve upon my scholarly writing.

As a DNP student, we must be prepared to critically appraise literature to apply paramount evidence based practice in attaining the goal of improving health care outcomes.
