Responses to classmates must consist of at least 350 words (not including the greeting and the references), do NOT repeat the same thing your classmate is saying, try to add something of value like a resource, educational information to give to patients, possible bad outcomes associated with the medicines discussed in the case, try to include a sample case you’ve seen at work and discuss how you feel about how that case was handled. Try to use supportive information such as current Tx guidelines, current research related to the treatment, anything that will enhance learning in the online classroom.

n the book Health Behavior Theory by Dr. Joanna Hyden, she defined the different levels of influences, namely intrapersonal, interpersonal, and community theories (Hayden, 2019).

Intrapersonal theory or individual theory focuses on factors that influence their behavior. The following factors can affect one’s behavioral choices.

Knowledge
Attitudes
Beliefs
Motivation
Self-concept
Developmental history
Past experience
Skills

Examples of intrapersonal theories:

Self-efficacy theory
Health belief model
Theory of reasoned action
Attribution theory
Transtheoretical model

Interpersonal theories concentrate on the factors at the interpersonal level on the assumption that other people affect our behavior.

– Other people affect our behavior by:

Sharing their thoughts
Sharing their advice
Sharing their feelings
Their emotional support and assistance

– Other people can be:

Family
Friends
Peers
Health care workers
Co-workers
– Example is the social cognitive theory

The community-level theory focuses on factors within social systems:

Communities
Organizations
Institutions
Public policy (rules, regulations, legislation, norms, and policies)

– Examples: Diffusion of innovation theory, ecological models, and social capital theory

A good example is a study on the eating behaviors of children. We can find intrapersonal, interpersonal, and community theories are involved in the influence on the eating behavior of adolescents.

Intrapersonal theory or individual influences such as food preference (prefers sweets, oily or salty foods), knowledge, and attitudes towards healthy foods (Story M, 2002) (Scaglioni S, 2018). Biological factors such as hunger are also an important individual influence on eating habits. Hunger is a physiological drive that influences children to eat healthy or unhealthy foods such as “cravings” (Story M, 2002). Some barriers to eating would be the availability of healthy foods, cost, and time of getting foods which is part of the Health Belief Model as perceived barriers (personal beliefs influencing the health behavior).

Interpersonal theory – can be food served during family meals, peer pressure on maintaining to be thin (Story M, 2002). Another factor would be media influence, such as food advertisements (Story M, 2002) (Scaglioni S, 2018). Parental influence on eating behavior is even as early as a baby. Studies show that a mother’s food choices during pregnancy and breastfeeding may set the stage for an infant’s later acceptance of solid foods (Savage JS, 2007).

Community influence such as school food in cafeterias and canteens impacts healthy meals (Story M, 2002) (Scaglioni S, 2018). The presence of vending machines increases the availability of snacks and convenience (Scaglioni S, 2018). Access to food within the environment is also a factor that influences childrens’ eating behaviors. In Spain, 95% of the schools were surrounded by unhealthy food retailers within a short-range, with a median of 17 unhealthy food outlets per school (Gubbels JS, 2020). The Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP), an example of a federal program, provides reimbursements for nutritious meals and snacks for children in center-based care and family child-care homes (USDA, 2021). It requires that meals and snacks include a minimum number of age-appropriate servings from four food categories, but not nutrient-based standards of the Dietary Guidelines for Americans. (Story M K. K.-O., 2008).

Utilizing the intrapersonal, interpersonal, or community-level theories helps understand the issues related to childrens’ eating behavior and will help develop health initiatives in addressing these issues.
