Resumes are subjective, but a reminder here is how you should redo/revisit your resume for each position applied for. The letter and resume must clearly show how you fit the position you are applying for. Some resumes will need to be experience heavy, some will be education heavy, in either case, suit the resume to the position every time.
This cover letter and resume can be written for a made-up/invented position or a position you find on the Internet, etc. You decide.
Cover letter/Application letter (Begins on page 520 of your textbook/Cover letter examples begin on page 523):
· The purpose of your cover/application letter and resume is to get you an interview for the position.
· A cover letter can make/break your chances of an interview in format alone.
· Pay attention to issues, such as spelling, format, and grammar.
· The cover/application letter (aka cover letter, aka letter of interest) is just as critical as the resume.
· Your cover letter should contain detailstell me what you can do, but do not bore me or make this too long.
· Include your contact information.
· Avoid anything negative in your cover letter, like gaps in employment.
Common Resume Issues to Remember:
1. Include the name of the universities (TAMUC)/higher institutions you have attended including start dates, graduation dates, and/or your expected graduation date, degrees, majors, GPAs. List these with the most current date first. If you have one college degree already, you should delete high school information.
2. Include employment history from current/most recent to later dates of employment. Remember, the length of a resume is about 1 page per 10 years of experience.
3. Be specific with tasks, use action words, and include the most relevant tasks first.
4. Do not list your references on your resume. You can include a line near the bottom (Professional References Available Upon Request).
5. Remember to list memberships, affiliations, awards, recognition, etc.
6. You can use an objective statement/summary focused on the position you are applying for.
7. Do not use the word I (Me, my, we) in your resume, unless it is part of your objective summary.
8. The design of your resume should match the design of your cover letter.
9. The font size should not be too small or too large.
10. Be consistent throughout your resume. One tip: If you have bullets, exclude periods throughout (or include periods throughout).
