Surveys show that implemented programs that focus on healthy eating and nutrition education amount children can help decrease the obesity rates among children and adolescents. WIC is a special supplemental nutrition program that targets pregnant women, mothers, and children birth to age five. This program provides families with healthy food options and appointments to help educate children the importance of healthy eating. SNAP is another supplemental program also known as the Food Stamp Program. Qualifying individuals receive assistance with purchasing healthy food options that can decrease obesity within the family. School age children can receive up to half of their daily calorie intake during school hours. Making sure that children receive the proper nutrition during school, not only can reduce their chances of obesity, but can improve performance during class.

Understanding and breaking down obesity into categories can give us a better understand and possibly pinpoint a trend. Prevalence of obesity and socioeconomic status are two categories that are discussed and broken down by collected data. Having data, trends and maps are extremely important. Obesity in children and adolescents can affect their adult life and having the data to possibly prevent during childhood years will benefit the child.

Nearly one in three children and adolescents are overweight or obese. No one is eliminated from the risk of possibly being affected by obesity. All states, counties, communities, and school systems deal obesity in children and adolescents. All races, ethnicities, genders and economic statuses are affected by obesity. Also discussed on this website is the increasing health related costs associated with obesity in children. Many issues can occur in adulthood when children are obese, and it is not properly treated. Facts are broken down by healthcare expenses and problems that occur with obesity.

According to the World Health Organization, obese children will most likely continue to be obese in their adult life if preventable interventions are not introduced at an early age. It is important to be aware and understand the consequences of childhood obesity and how dangerous these consequences can be to a child. It is also important to recognize the contributing factors to childhood obesity. From choosing health foods to eat, family history, amount of exercise and the lack of resources are several contributing factors that can help prevent obesity in children. Prevention is a very important aspect to help children and families prevent obesity.
