MATH 225N Week 4 Discussion: Probability
For grading purposes, this particulardiscussion posting area runs from SundayJan 24 through Sunday Jan 31, inclusively. We explore ( mathematical ) Probability thisWeek. This includes probability concepts, conditional probability, independence, dependence, event( s ), the concept of“mutually exclusive,” the concept of“complement,” the multiplication rule, andthe addition rule. Please don’t forget to use an “outside”resource as part of the content anddocumentation for your first Post – the Postwhich is due on or before Wednesday of theWeek – the Post where you make the mostmajor contribution to the Weeklydiscussion posting area and attempt toaddress the discussion prompts / cues forthe Week. It could possibly include a website that you discovered on the internet atlarge, so long as the web site is relevant andsubstantial and does not violate theChamberlain University policy forprohibited web sites, and so forth. It couldpossibly include references / resources thatyou discover through making use of theonline Chamberlain University Library (please click Resources along the left andthen click Library to discover the link to theChamberlain University online Library ) . Check out the link below for someinformation about concepts such asindependence, dependence, mutuallyexclusive, disjoint, complement, andconditional probability.
Please remember that probabilitiesare NOT percentages and so theanswers ( no doubt approximate androunded off ) in the examples aboutthe green cat above should please berespectively 0.54 0.67 for the two probabilityquestions and

Would the analogy work best if youset up your own two way table likethis ?? Left Handed Right Handed Total
FemalesMalesTotal
I am really asking ( this is notrhetorical ) because I am justglancing at this assignment for thefirst time this morning. Also your lower right cell hereshould be 30 . And the sum of the four cellsinvolving left handed females, righthanded females, left handed males, and right handed males should be 30as well. That is, you survey 30 humans andeach human is placed into one andonly one of those 4 possible cells. Then you compute and fill in columntotals and row totals.
Then as you will see the Table Totalor the Grand Total in the lower rightwill be 30 . Once you set up your contingencytable ( two way table ) correctly, answering the 4 questions will be abreeze. But give probabilities withanswers like 0.XXXX please !! DON’T state a percentage as ananswer to a probability question. Try hard to use one of the twoprovided links to find your “outside”reference / resource this Week 4 . It would get boring though in a largeclass if EVERYONE did that. Soplease do that if you can but if a fewFolks choose to find some other“outside” reference / resource thisWeek ( about left handedness andright handedness issues and trendsand data ) that would certainly addsome variety and freshness to ourWeek 4 graded Posting area. Finally, many of you might makemistakes this Week, even though youhave the example provided about theGreen Cat( s ) So if you correct each other’smistakes in follow up Posts, pleasebe polite and sensitive anddiplomatic and professional and all
that – and I will try hard to do that aswell. We are all Friends and fellowlearners here. Thanks Friends and here below are acouple Videos to watch if you areconcerned that the one Green Cat( s) example is not quite enough tomake you feel confident and secureabout all of this. Thanks Friends and work hard thisWeek 4 ! Your commitment andenergy and drive and motivation willbe put to the test during this Week 4

This is one kind of an example of using an“outside” source / resource to add to what isrevealed in our Weekly Lesson in Modulesand in our Weekly text book reading. Please don’t forget to look over the GradedDiscussion Posting Rubric each Week to becertain that you are meeting all of theFrequency requirements as well as all of theQuality requirements for graded discussionposting each Week.
