As a Registered nurse for two years, my passion for becoming a psychiatric nurse practitioner continues to grow. I have a plan to work with children and adolescents who encounter mental health illnesses. With Walden University being a university that allows for a diverse community, it positively impacts our academic careers.

My Goals and University Vision and Mission
My name is Tara Tillman. I live in a small town in South Mississippi. I have been in nursing for 12 years, with most of those years in rural emergency medicine. In this field, I have seen first-hand the adverse effects of limited primary care in rural low-income areas. My professional goal is to become a full-time family nurse practitioner and serve the rural low-income community where I live. Thus, my academic goal is to obtain my Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) with Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) specialization.
Walden’s vision, mission, goals, and social change aligned with my professional goal to provide positive change in the world by equipping me with the resources and knowledge to transform me into a scholar-practitioner at the highest level.Walden University College of Nursing’s mission statement is why I am confident that Walden is the right fit for my professional and academic goals. According to the Walden University College of Nursing, its mission is to dedicate excellence to nursing education. Walden MSN Program Outcomes and Perspective
Walden MSN program outcomes and perspective provide critical standards that will help me fulfill my professional and academic goals. Outcomes one, three, five, and seven are key to my professional goal to provide primary care services to rural low-income areas by offering high-quality healthcare that delivers positive social change. For my academic goal, outcomes two, four, and six will give me a solid foundation to be a scholar-practitioner through research, effective communication, and ongoing commitment to professional development and value of nursing theories and ethical principles (Walden University, 2022, Master of Science in Nursing section, para. 2).
Networking
Networking is vital because it builds trusting relationships and connections that will help me professionally and academically. Networking is necessary to succeed in today’s job market, especially for career advancement in the nursing field. US Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reports that 70% of all jobs are found through networking (Schmidt, n.d.). According to Consumer News and Business Channel, 70% of all jobs are not published on publicly available job search sites. These statistics show that networking will be critical in gaining employment and accomplishing my professional goal of becoming a full-time family nurse practitioner (Fisher, 2019). Not only is networking necessary for employment, but it also is essential academically.
Networking with help me reach my goal of graduating with my MSN- FNP by offering support and resources such as my student advisor, instructors, preceptors, classmates, and the writing center. I have already started using my networking skills to secure preceptors for my practicum portions of this program. And I will continue to use my networking skills in my clinical portion to develop a robust and trustworthy relationship with my preceptors and their faculties. As described above, networking is a primary asset for me, both professionally and academically, that I will use throughout my career and life to expand my career opportunities, gain knowledge, and develop and sustain long-term connections.

Hello Tara,
Working in a low-income area is a bigger challenge than the nurses themselves. I can relate to it since I have been always working in peripheral areas. Every day, we face a reduction of supplies, the limited number of professionals, and the difficulties of patient compliance with treatment. According to Martin, 2018, “The shortage of rural physicians is well known, and there’s the notion that doctors don’t necessarily establish their practices where the need for health care is greatest––in poor and unhealthy communities.” (Martin, 2018).
With that being said, it’s great that more professionals are proceeding to higher level education and eventually working in those areas of need. Walden University will support our practitioners through the prestigious MSN program, which is critical to our research and professional outcomes. Education is a particularly important source of social change. (Walden University, 2022, Master of Science in Nursing section, para. 2).
On your last paragraph, I agreed, networking is a necessary tool to attach the professional career you are looking for. But it is also important to improve the best practice and exchange ideas during a professional or academic period. Networking is about establishing, building, and nurturing long-term, mutually beneficial relationships with the people you meet.

It is also important to network with university staff, including advisors, preceptors, and the writing center, to improve our educational experience. Another great way to network with others and learn a new skill set with diverse types of populations is to volunteer (Wofford, 2018). Like yourself, I have already networked with several individuals to secure potential preceptors for field site experiences.
You could tap into friends, family, or even classmates’ networks to build meaningful connections for academic and professional purposes (Wofford, 2018). You could also join professional organizations to connect with other nurse practitioners, such as the American Association of Nurse Practitioners or the Mississippi Association of Nurse Practitioners (Walden University, LLC, 2018). Using some of these networking techniques may assist in acquiring future family nurse practitioner employment opportunities. Professional networking is the best way to obtain your desired job (Schmidt, n.d.).

I love how your goal is to become a full-time family nurse practitioner and serve the rural low-income community where I live. I love it, because it is similar to my goals, except my time in the rural emergency department I worked in made me realize my passion for mental health care. One of Walden University objectives is to “Facilitate positive social change where they work, in their communities, and in society” (Walden, 2022). I hold a strong belief that together we can all make positive changes in our communities, whether it is from primary care or mental health care.
I never really thought of how building trusting relationships with my coworkers was considered networking. But it does make sense, these are the people who we can go to if we are looking for a new job, need a mentor/coach, or just developing a support system to help us through the crazy days of nursing (Hamlin, 2022).

Hello Kara,
I specifically like that you referenced health inequity rather than the more widely used term of equality. I believe the more specific we are able to talk on a problem, the easier it will be to find a solution. Equity is making sure that people have the same opportunity as others, rather than aiming for the same end-results, which is an important difference (Gogoi & Sumesh, 2022). While composing my own portion of the post on the role of networking, I did not consider it as a way to help prevent burnout.
There is the mention of networking contributing to a better environment to work in (Schmidt, n.d.) and with that, I would absolutely feel comfortable making the leap to say that would also reduce chances of burnout due to the workplace. So much of the experience at work is the people that are around. Thanks for posting!

Hello everyone. My name is Brandi Daniels. I am currently a RN serving active duty as a commissioned officer in the US Navy and work in the PACU. I decided to attend Walden University to pursue my Masters in Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner. Walden University’s vision, mission and goals aligned with my desire and goal to be a critical asset to my community. The vision states that it aims to advance “the greater global good” (Walden University, 2019). The ability to have a positive effect on my patients and improve the overall health in the community I’m in help me to become a successful scholar-practitioner.
Additionally, Walden’s mission lines up with my goal to increase positive patient outcomes as the mission states that it aims to transform professionals to “scholar-practitioners so that they can effect positive social change” (Walden University, 2019). The goal “to produce graduates who are scholarly, reflective practitioners and agents of positive change” as well as the social change initiative that strives to result in the improvement of social conditions also aligns with my academic and professional goals.
The Walden MSN Program Outcomes and perspectives relate to my professional and academic goals and to becoming a scholar practitioner. One of the learning outcomes is to:
“implement specialist nursing roles to promote quality improvement of patient-centered care in accordance with professional practice standards that transform health outcomes for diverse populations” (Walden University, 2020).
With this outcome in mind, the promotion of quality improvement that is evidence based, allows me to provide higher quality of care from patients of all backgrounds and social/economic status.
Networking can play a big role in increasing positive patient outcomes. By networking with other healthcare professionals that have the same as well as different specialties, referring a patient to a reputable health care specialist may help improve the patient’s prognosis. Additionally, networking with certain individuals can help my academic success as they can be valuable resources for advice and mentorship. It can also help with future job procurement. According to Schmidt (2018), 70% of all jobs are found through networking. The phrase “it’s all about who you know” holds true in this aspect.

Great post! Networking has endless benefits and you touched on some excellent examples in your post! As you stated, networking is important in creating positive patient outcomes. As nurses we dedicate ourselves to lifelong learning, to ensure we provide the best quality of care and the best patient outcomes. We do this by staying informed and being a part of ongoing developments, in evidence-based practice.
By networking with healthcare professionals in various specialties, we are presented with information, that makes us examine patient care on a broader scale, than we would normally view it. It also presents insight into how healthcare is changing, overall. Together, this introduces fresh ideas and better patient outcomes.
The benefits of networking on academic success, was another key point you touched on. Networking allows you to establish relationships with like-minded people, that can offer not only advice but support as well. As working adults, on a quest to obtain a higher degree and become scholarly-practitioners, we may face obstacles along our journey. These obstacles may cause various levels of stress. Ensuring you have a good support system, can help you to be more productive and decrease the level of stress you are experiencing (Schmidt, n.d.).
Networking provides the opportunity to connect with professionals in the specialty you have interest in and gain insight from the knowledge and skills they have. The professionals you network with can also be valuable assets when you begin to look for a job in your new career. Based on statistics, more than half of employed individuals, secured their job by networking with other professionals (Wofford, 2018).

It’s great that you found your calling of being a Nurse. I’m sure your experience as CNA, medical assistant, and lab technician broadens your overall view of healthcare even more which will definitely help you in the future as you will be working with these healthcare specialties as a nurse practitioner. All of us chose Walden University as a choice of school due to the fact that our mission, vision, and goals align with the ones Walden University holds, which includes preparing the students “for the greater good” to help the communities in need (Walden University, 2020).
As you’ve mentioned that you want to help the minorities in need, there is a huge number of disparities within communities when it comes to access to education, healthcare, mental health, and addiction medicine help. I truly believe we can make a difference by becoming the providers within our communities as we hold a high sense of compassion that has been taught to us since the beginning of our nursing careers.
As you’ve mentioned the importance of networking, I do want to mention that working on our networking at the beginning of our journey will help us transition to our new role easier. It all starts with our program advisor and extends to and beyond our clinical practicum. Expanding our networking to organizations, LinkedIn profiles, clinical preceptors during practicum, physicians and NP colleagues would greatly help up find the area where we can fit in and fulfill our vision and goal (Writers, 2020).

Professional networking opportunities emphasize development of relationships and interactions among nurse practitioners and scholars. I have been a registered nurse (RN) with a BSN and my intent is to specialize as a psychiatric-mental health nurse practitioner. Having a family and trying to advance one’s education can be complex but I believe that my resolve to go back to school is critical in changing my career advancement and attaining requisite qualifications to improve the quality of care outcomes.
My goal is to specialize in psychiatric mental health as nurse practitioner to help individuals, households, and communities as well as the health system deal with the opioid epidemic and associated mental health issues. Through this, I can bring social change to families and patients. After reflection on furthering my education in nursing, I realized that getting a master’s degree as a psychiatric-mental health nurse practitioner (PMHNP) will offer the education, knowledge and skills that I require to serve the population (ANCC, n.d).
Therefore, my academic and professional goals entail getting a master’s degree and probably getting a terminal degree like Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) to position myself as a psychiatric-mental nurse practitioner who can practice independently. Through the incorporation of personal and professional values like compassion, empath, integrity and hard work, I will offer patient-centered care for better outcomes.
Getting the right school is essential to meet my professional goals. The Walden University’s School of Nursing (SON) (n.d) vision and mission statement inspires me to understand that I can attain these goals. The school’s vision is having a unique learning community where knowledge is considered valuable when it allows graduates to develop solutions to critical society problems to advance the greater global good. As a master’s student, the knowledge and skills I acquire in through this university and its nursing school should be applied to effect change in communities in different areas of healthcare provision.
The MSN program outcomes and perspectives relate to my professional and academic goals as they expect one to acquire skills as an advanced nurse practitioner to implement change in their communities. The program’s perspectives include having social change and deployment of skills to generate local solutions to local challenges (Walden University, n.d b).
These relate to my goals of providing quality care to families and developing interventions based on evidence-based practices. As I become a scholar-practitioner, it implies that I should show more dedication and commitment because of the challenges of the combination. As such the MSN program outcomes and perspectives will help me understand what is expected and what lies ahead for effective adjustments.
Networking is important as it allows one to interact with goals, share best practices in care, and get the motivation and inspiration to pursue professional and career development paths. Networking will help me achieve my professional and academic goals through interaction with colleagues to develop inter-professional and multidisciplinary collaborations (AANP, n.d).
