Planning an escape plan around one’s abilities is crucial to the safety of anyone with physical or mental disabilities.
The community setting that can be impacted by the disaster advertisement presented is home health. Ensuring that patients who may have physical or mental disabilities have a fire safety plan should be assessed when visiting their homes, especially in locations where wildfires are common. Wildfires are disasters that a nurse can play a crucial role in the preparedness stage. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), has issued a detailed guide for citizen preparedness (Nies & McEwen, 2019). “Nurses could use this guide in developing educational programs and disaster plans related to natural and manmade disasters to which individuals, families, or communities may be exposed (Nies & McEwen, 2019, p. 597)”. The particular flyer, for fire safety for people with disabilities, was provided by FEMA. It provides an easy to read checklist, information on the importance to prepare, and their website where additional information can be found. The FEMA’s mission is to support citizens and first responders to guarantee that as a country, we all work collaboratively to build, sustain, and improve the ability to prepare for, protect against, respond to, recover from, and mollify all hazards (Neis & McEwen, 2019). As a home health nurse, I can use the content published by FEMA to educate my patients with disabilities.

Explore your community and find an advertisement that represents helping community members be prepared for a disaster.
