I was in charge of the care of a middle-aged female patient who had been diagnosed with type1 diabetes in childhood. The patient was admitted in a coma state and the history suggested poor compliance with medication. I educated the patient on her condition, the danger signs, and the importance of adherence to medication in to promote a healthy life and avoid readmission for the same problem. If and advocate was not available to the patient, the patient would not have known that her situation would have been prevented by compliance with medication. Without this knowledge, the patient might be readmitted severally in the same condition she presented in.
Advocacy in patient care is a key practice in nursing. It can be achieved through patient education, acting as a patient representative, and protecting patient rights. It generally leads to optimal patient care and security and better health outcomes may be guaranteed.
