Module 1 Portfolio Milestone

The generation of solar electricity has become a favorite among consumers around the globe. Denver Solar Panels, Inc. has concluded that offering their services nationwide is a necessary step in order to increase their business and stay competitive in the solar panel market. The current configuration that supports the needs of the company includes many physical servers that cost a lot of money and time to maintain. The Chief Information Officer (CIO) anticipates between 15 to 20 servers to support. They need a solution that is practical and cost effective. Bradshaw Network Specialists feels confident that the amount of physical hardware can be scaled down even more, but still support their current infrastructure.

Virtualization

Virtualization is the concept of taking something tangible and converting it into something that simulates the real version in an authentic and realistic way and without the physical components being present. A good example that most people can relate to is the kind of games that are available to play using an Xbox. One can play a virtual game of football without human football players, a real football, or a real football field. Software replaces the tangible items required to play the game.

In the world of information technology, we would apply that same concept to components required for the organization’s network such as physical servers, storage devices, and network resources. Virtualization uses software to mimic hardware functionality in order to construct a virtual system. This approach will allow the IT organization to run and maintain multiple operating systems, multiple virtual systems, and numerous applications on a single server. Bradshaw Network Specialists will evaluate the current infrastructure to determine the appropriate amount of hardware needed to support a virtualized infrastructure for Denver Solar Panels, Inc.

OS virtualization is the use of software to allow a piece of hardware to run multiple operating system images at the same time. The technology got its start on mainframes decades ago, allowing administrators to avoid wasting expensive processing power.

Benefits of Virtualization

There are several financial benefits that come with virtualization. Virtualization is an option that will allow Denver Solar Panels, Inc. to expand their business in a way that requires a moderate amount of hardware compared to the traditional way of building an organizations infrastructure. When less hardware is required, it means that less space is required. It also means that less electricity is required to run the devices and keep them cool which is an added benefit in improving the environment we live in.

Having fewer physical servers to maintain will cut down on the number of employees required to maintain the network. It will also reduce the number of hours of labor required to install the traditional number of servers and maintain them post installation. One of the features provided with virtualization software is the ability to make up to date snapshots of the software configuration. Regular snapshots provide an easy rollback plan if a change causes an unexpected failure. Disaster recovery is also easier and faster in a virtualized environment.

Conclusion

Virtualization has so many benefits but saving money and making the installation and maintenance of an organization’s infrastructure are reasons to consider a more innovative approach. Using virtual servers will save money, space, time, and it is a way to help improve the impact that the traditional infrastructure has on our environment.
