A mathematical approach to research with a randomized control group involves manipulating one or more independent variables and applying them to one or more dependent variables to measure changes in those variables (Helbig, 2018). For example, Shanghai Chest Hospital in China has performed an experiment with a randomized clinical trial to study the effectiveness of “nebulized dexmedetomidine-lidocaine for topical anesthesia as a premedication for flexible bronchoscopy” (Gu, Xu, Lu, Huang, & Wu, 2019). A random method of distribution was used to divide sixty patients into three groups in the present study. It was designed to determine the efficacy of different methods to administer dexmedetomidine-lidocaine as premedication for flexible bronchoscopy. According to the study, nebulized dexmedetomidine-lidocaine inhalation is most effective for bronchoscopy because of its reduction of moderate to severe coughing, faster recovery, and reduced vasoconstrictor consumption (Gu, Xu, Lu, Huang, & Wu, 2019). A quasi-experiment, or non-randomized study, is similar to an experimental study in that an independent variable is manipulated (Helbig, 2018). Despite this, the study does not include a control group or randomization. During the academic year 2017-2018, one of the public Spanish universities conducted a pilot study among first-year undergraduate students. A total of 112 first-year undergraduate students were included in the sample. The purpose of this study was to identify various educational activities that can be used by nursing students in order to improve their competency and critical thinking skills. Moreover, the research identified a particular educational activity that is more effective than others. In non-experimental research designs, independent variables are not controlled or manipulated in the study. Researchers conducting non-experimental research study measure variable as they naturally occur (Helbig, 2018).For an example, the International Journal of Pediatric Otorhinolaryngology has performed analytical study to find association between obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) and the complication of thoracic deformity in children. The research study has analyzed medical records of 39 pediatric OSAS patients with thoracic deformity and 39 pediatric OSAS patients without thoracic deformity as control group between January 2015 and June 2019 (Wang, Lin, Ye, Xu, Lin, Ke, Chen, 2020).
