· Week 4: Clubs, Affiliations, & Programs

· Dear Greater New Bedford High School Athletic Director,

I am Will Collins currently working as Defensive Coach Madison Senior High School. I am writing this letter in response to the advertisement I came across regarding the Head Defense Coach at Greater New Bedford Regional Vocational Technical High School New Bedford, MA. One reason that makes coaching defense interesting is that it creates an opportunity to network with other coaches, player, and the community. Secondly, I am interested in coaching the defense at Greater New Bedford Regional Vocational Technical High School in New Bedford, MA because I’m a motivator and the job will allow me to be at the heart of the rest through motivation. Supervisors have the mandate of encouraging their teams during low times, and I am suited for that kind of work. Lastly, the coaching and mentoring role empowers me to shape the destiny of other players and students by keeping them on track and addressing their needs. I highly value Professional and Personal growth therefore, my role as a coach allows me to ensure players know that they are student-athletes first. Completing their education is far more important than winning games.

· One of my duties in the role of Defensive Coach is to manage the coordination and structure of the team defensive game plan. I am qualified to undertake the roles because of my long-term experience coaching and assistant coaching on different football teams. In my previous job, as a defensive coordinator I managed the defensive line and the defensive backs to ensure the team remained within the mission of the team. The other role is special teams. I am confident of delivering on special teams because I have had a long interaction with punting, punt returners, kickoff, and kick return team. I have in the past attended training on special team execution, strategies, and garnered experience to handle the role of special team coach.

· Again, due to my previous coaching positions, I can guarantee the continued winning tradition within the organization. I feel that I am the right person for the job because I boast excellent communication skills. My interaction with many people and players during my career is the reason why I enjoy having the reputation as a motivational coach.

· Week 5: Athletics

Coach Youth Basketball/Football ages 8-10

· 1. If you woke up and had 2,000 unread emails and could only answer 300 of them how would you choose which ones to answer? I would prioritize my emails first. It all starts with what is relevant and how it relates to mission of the job. The emails I would respond too would be the high priority of the mission, the mission deadline will be answered and addressed accordingly.

· 2. If you could have dinner with anyone from history, who would it be and why? If I could have dinner with anyone from history, it would be Wesley Anthony Brown. The reason I chose the late Mr. Wesley A. Brown because he is the first African American graduate of the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland. He served in the United States Navy from May 2, 1944, until June 30, 1969. He was involved in both the Korean and Vietnam wars. I believe it is amazing that Mr. Brown graduated from the prestigious United States Naval Academy, especially during challenging years for African Americans in America. I would like to know his story of perseverance, resilience, the struggle for racial equality and becoming the first in his family to attend college. In that, he served in the same field I served in for 23 years of my navy career, Civil Engineering.

· 3. If you were a mode of transportation what type of transportation would you be and why? I would be a train. I view a train as very aggressive and forceful. A train has a one-track mind, stays in its lane, and can hull tons of goods across the country. A train serves the urban, rural, and suburban areas. A train is very diversified; it can be an underground rail, a above ground passenger train or a high-speed rail.

· 4. If you had to be shipwrecked on a deserted island, but all your human needs, such as food and water, were taken care of, what two items would you want to have with you, and why? If I was shipwrecked or deserted on an island, I would want solar powered smart phone. My solar powered smartphone would give me access to everything I need both personally and professionally. Next, I would need and want my tool kit for basic needs; for example, build a cover/concealment from the elements or create a weapon for protection.

· Week 6: Volunteer Work

· Week 6 Assignment: Mock Interview Analysis

· Interview process can be challenging if the interviewer is not well prepared to interview the interviewee. That is something I took out from my one-on-one interview with Mr. Ryan Castro as I interviewed as the High School as Football Defensive Coordinator. I realized that one can conduct a successful interview if the person has done enough research and background checks on the interviewee. I learned a lot from the interview experience and one thing that became important to me going into the future interviews is that I have to prepare well by jotting down important questions that will help the interviewee to open up and speak (Barker et al., 2019). This is important because it will help me unearth important information that I need to know from the person I am interviewing. I also noted that one can only be ca good interviewer if the person is a good listener. Listening keenly to what the interviewee is saying is important because it will help the interviewer get the most from the interviewee.

· Again, it was apparent from the interview that it is important to use open-ended questions in an interview so that the interviewee does not feel that is being pinned down. This will enhance the relationship between the interviewer and the interviewee something that is good disclosure. Once more, I realized that interviewees need to be addressed with high level of respect. Many interviewees will open up and share their knowledge, experience, and other important information if they feel that they are respected by the interviewer (Bulu? et al., 2017). About myself as an interviewer, I realized that I can easy form a good communication relationship with people and I will ensure that I carry on this trait in forthcoming interviews and other one-on-one communications. From the feedbacks, I realized that I am a little bit shy when communicating with older people. This is a shortcoming that limit my communication effectiveness because I do not maintain eye contact as expected and also limit use of non-verbal cues. This is something I will work on going into the future to enhance my communication.

· Week 7: Certifications and Publications

(Lean Six Sigma Yellow Belt, Project manager Level II, COR Level II

· The sports management program has improved my knowledge as I move towards my professional path. The coaching course has various components of coaching that I have to learn. An example is the coaching philosophy and responsibilities. From such a component, I get to see the Coach’s values and duties as a reference. The other components are related to the team, player, community, and travel aspects. From those components, I have learned how a player and team should behave, a team’s importance as a community, and the importance of following a schedule. Then there are the critical components on drug use that teaches on policies, documentation, and testing. Hence, the course has different aspects that have added to my knowledge, especially as I interact with sport-related activities in the real world.

· Another further expansion of the course is research articles. The first article deals with the coaching aspect in detail. Through the article, I know the coaching processes and the forms of coaching (external and internal coaching). I have also learned that coaching is a valuable topic to the nursing workforce. Also, a coaching relationship is another important aspect that helps in assuring coaching capabilities and reinforcing them (Kowalski, 2020). The second article explores the team coaching aspect. The authors highlight leadership and the approaches to team coaching. Among the important things I have learned is that team coaching must be integrated with conditions for a team to be effective (Wageman, & Hackman, 2005).

· One of the best projects I have done is interviewing Mr. Kevin Jordan, High School Varsity Track Coach. Through the interview, I have learned the various aspects that have given me the courage to move up my career ladder. Coupled with the project are a financing project and research on women’s sports programs and related issues. With the above knowledge, I can critically think of a way to improve and effectively move up my chosen profession.
