You mentioned that the “focus for effective teaching should be on tools like reading materials, videos, and tutorials that enable patients and caregivers to ask questions and receive clarification”. However, we have patients who may have language barriers or cognitive challenges and they may not be able to read the materials provided or may not understand the language in the videos or tutorials that may be provided. So what do we do when we are faced with situations like this? I think we should attempt to educate our patients in the language or medium that they prefer and if possible provide brochures/videos in their preferred languages on the topic or issues we want to teach/educate them on.
Before attempting to educate, the nurse should be well grounded in the physiology and clinical presentation of what he/she wants to educate the patient on. You mentioned the nurse’s comprehension of objects like lab tests and procedures. Honestly even among ourselves as nurses, there is nothing so frustrating than attempting to get report from incompetent nurses who cannot give you accurate information on some lab reports or procedures about the plan of care for patients during report time let alone think about them providing education or information to patients and their families about their care. As nurses, we should be very careful on the information we give to our patients because with the internet and other technologies now, patients do research about their illness and ask questions to remove some of their doubts. We should be in position to confirm what the already know or be bold enough to tell the patients that we can find the answers to their questions if we don’t know the answer to their questions at that time.
