The selected population is Hispanic. This population is the second largest ethnic group in the US. According to Pew Research Center (2020), the Hispanic population is about 60.6 million in 2019, which represents 18% share of national population. Culturally, Hispanics trace their ancestry from Mexico and so, they have Mexican culture. The Hispanic population in US entails major subgroups such as the Dominicans, Colombians, Mexicans, Puerto Ricans, Salvadoran, and Ecuadorians. The population is regarded as the youngest American population and generally has inferior economic, social, and educational status.

Hispanics are economically disadvantaged and face various challenges such as low income, inadequate access to healthcare, high uninsured rates, and poor housing. According to Healthy People 2020 (2021), obesity is primary risk factors for serious health conditions and chronic diseases such as osteoarthritis, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, heart disease and stroke, and various types of cancer. It is based on the LHI’s priority of ensuring good nutrition, healthy body weight, and physical activity as critical areas of an individual’s health and wellbeing.

Obesity has become a serious public health concern in US which affects all population, gender, age, and ethnic/cultural groups. However, the condition is more prevalent among Hispanics. Obesity is associated with reduced quality of life, poor mental health outcomes, and leading causes of death such as diabetes, cancers, stroke, and heart diseases.

While working on the telemetry unit of a small local community hospital near multiple mushroom farms, a large part of the population of patients spoke Spanish as their primary language. While we had translator phones available to assist with communication, I found that many times nurses were not taking the time to use them or that there weren’t nearly enough translator phones available for everyone who needed them. After coming in for a night shift at the hospital, I found that one of my Spanish-speaking patients who did not speak any English did not have a translator phone in his room, and he had been admitted for 3 or 4 days. After locating a translator phone and having a conversation with him, I discovered that he still had no idea what his diagnosis was or what the treatment plan was. I answered all of his questions and explained his diagnosis, medications, and treatment plan using the translator. He expressed such gratitude to me and explained that he was having a lot of anxiety. I can’t imagine going to a foreign country and having to seek medical treatment without being able to communicate with anyone. It would be terrifying. It is important for nurses to remember to have empathy for their patients from all cultural backgrounds. How would you like to be treated if you were walking in their shoes? Translator phones should be used for patients who do not speak or speak very little English from the moment they enter the hospital. Communication is imperative for a good assessment. There was another case of a Spanish-speaking gentleman who was having behavioral issues. Come to find out that he was confused and hallucinating. This was only found after using a translator phone for assessment. Making more translator phones readily available and utilizing tablets with translator apps is how we can prevent miscommunication in the future. Also educating nurses on transcultural nursing is imperative.
